It is deglamorizing stunt casting for Barbra Streisand to merely sully herself as a sooty, choleric pr******te and her closeup in the jail cell looks like an Annie Leibovitz photoshoot about streetwalking. When it is expounded that she is a ho**er of white-collar clientele, her pret-a-porter demeanor is suddenly elucidated. Streisand's apoplectic tantrums consist of too much succubus mugging (ex. Her tirade against "quacks" is a monologue out of drama class and her acting is synthetic). ...

An aversion to anything in modern society could vulcanize a character like author Giles De'Ath (John Hurt) as a sedentary monument of golden-age thinking but Hurt is charmingly amenable to the vagaries of today's innovations. Rather than being aghast over quiz shows and other pastimes, he is beautifully tabula-rasa. The movie-within-a-movie ('Hotpants College II') is a torrentially funny send-up of the 80's s*x romps like 'Porky's' (the disciplinarian female teacher's appearance is redolent of Beulah Balbricker)....

In typical Sterling Archer fashion, he is festooned with the Bond trope of two sc****ly clad women in his bed. The offbeat, quizzically uncouth twist in which the series and character upends the espionage genre when the nominal spy is so hungover that he is baffled as to what country he is in. This delectably picaresque, nonsequitir-chockful series finale augments the show's strengths as the globe-trotting adventure is spliced with the mundane drudgery of workplace water-cooler tedium like a mutiny spurred by the misunderstanding of an interoffice memo. ...

23/11/2023

Gregory Peck being propositioned for a braille party is hastily risque in the best way. A blackout is a prime setting for nocturnal cloak-and-dagger tomfoolery and Peter Stone enlists it as a clandestine metaphor for the clockwork amnesia-fugue case of David Stillwell (Peck). Amidst his diurnal routines and beseeching the "usual" elixir at a local watering hole, Peck is as mystified as the viewers as to why he is recognized by certain people and is a virtual unknown to others....

Ivan Passer morcellates the druggie philosophy of J.J. (George Segal) into a montage of box transition in an effort to pacify them as diurnal banalities. By doing so, the caper aspect of J.J. unsuccessfully heisting a safe is palatable without being romanticized. 'Born to Win' is a shaggily terse elixir in which Segal's reprobate charm is firing on all cylinders (especially when he is casually confronted by Parm (Karen Black, the insouciant owner of the car that he is plundering)....

'Anguish' isn't just clenchingly nerve-fraying for those with acute eye sensitivity. Within ten minutes, a scalpel is perforating a retina during surgery and it is exceptionally squeamish. But before that, a pigeon is fluttering around John Pressman's (a sorrowfully henpecked Michael Lerner in Norman Bates mode) antiquated abode and its re-captivity is wrung for asphyxiating suspense as well. Zelda Rubenstein is creepily offbeat (her telepathic-link device is a seashell and her fe**sh is snails) as John's hypnotizing mother....

As a casual kibitzer of 'Cheers' and a devout addict of the 'Frasier' spin-off, the trailer for Frasier's 2023 reprise chronicling his repatriation to Boston left me unenthusiastically inert. However, coinciding with the release date for the Paramount+ reboot was the announcement of a crowdfunded project in which a cavalcade of creators splice together their own sectarian version of a 22-minute episode within the span of 6-12 seconds....

With a Henry Mancini overture and a runtime of nearly three hours, 'The Great Race' is almost an omnibus road comedy and those are notoriously too undisciplined. The dedication to Laurel and Hardy at the onset is a lofty goal but Blake Edwards was the screwball auteur de jeur back then. Tony Curtis certainly was a photogenic daredevil and the glint off his teeth is a subtly aggrandizing touch....

27/09/2023

With such a miscellaneous career in front and behind the camera, Clint Eastwood's curse is that some of his pictures were swept under the proverbial rug during their theatrical run. 'Honkytonk Man' is a richly Homeric, tender Depression-Era drama in which the elder Eastwood is saddled with his son Kyle on a cross-country journey to the Grand Ole Opry. The coverage of a dust storm wreaking havoc on Red's (Eastwood) Oklahoma farm is peptonized with a whirlwind of painstakingly zestful period detail....

What happens when the main character of an increasingly lucrative franchise is essentially laid to rest? The think-tank for Lionsgate and Peacock attempt to prolong the John Wick macrocosm without the participation of Keanu Reeves or his alter-ego with this feature-length miniseries that spelunks through the sordid history of the Continental Hotel, its posh owner (Winston (Colin Woodell)) and the league of pret-a-porter assassins....

An I.C.E. officer collaring a motel of illegal aliens is license for a symposiacal message about border patrol. In the case of Ryan Prows' ganglionated, labyrinthian black comedy, it is merely a plot thread for organ donation. As Grand Guignol as the bodily dissection and extractions are, Prows is winkingly coquettish about the subject matter. While the literary chapter divisions are a staple of Quentin Tarantino, the film isn't a parvenu knockoff....
