Once upon a time, there was a team of project managers who were struggling to find the right workflow for their projects. They tried Waterfall Project Management but found it too rigid and inflexible. They tried Agile Project Management, but found it too fast-paced and chaotic. They were feeling lost and overwhelmed, until they stumbled upon a guide that helped them discover the different types of project management workflows available.

After reading the guide, the team realized that each workflow had its own unique features and benefits. With my first calendar year of my business coming to a close, I can confidently say I have never learned so much in my life. It feels a little bit like jumping into a dumpster fire head first, but I wouldn't have it any other way.

Here's 12 lessons I learned this year...
1️⃣ Take a day off. Take a mental health day.
2️⃣ Make decisions out of love, not fear. Stay true to your heart.
3️⃣ Life is too short to NOT follow your dreams.
4️⃣ You can always pivot.
5️⃣ It’s okay to change your mind.
6️⃣ You’re not supposed to fit in your clothes from high school.
7️⃣ Get a dog.
8️⃣ Sometimes you have to leave something go to make room for something better.
9️⃣ You bring about what you think about.
🔟 Give and receive in abundance.
1️⃣1️⃣ It’s okay to not be okay.
1️⃣2️⃣ Be mindful of where you spend your energy and who you spend it with.

I left corporate so I could say the f word in meetings. Okay, that's not the whole reason, but if that resonates with you keep reading.

Let's talk about it... When I first started my business I thought I had to talk a certain way, dress a certain way, and be someone I wasn't. I quickly realized that it isn't about what you wear, it's about how you make people feel. It isn't about talking a certain way, it's about speaking the truth, following through on your word, and falling on the sword when you f*ck up.

So yeah - I started saying the f word in meetings, because even though it's not "professional" I am human and sometimes I like to curse. Don't let your assumed expectations of potential clients get in your way. You don't need to fit a mold, there's a dream client out there for you who also says the f word in meetings. 😉

Working all day, but not getting sh*t done? Habits can be hard to get started, trust me I'm Miss. Self-help books, which are great, but only get you so far. Making TIME to start and retain new habits is the real challenge.

Don't wait until the new year to start showing up, exercising, reading, trying that hobby, stopping that bad habit, etc... start today. And maybe you will have a new habit formed before the new year. 😉

Here are 3 habits you can implement to make sure you have time for the things you enjoy and still get sh*t done:
🟤 Set timers - doing work in 25-minute increments with 5-minute breaks is the first key to breaking burnout
🟤 Time block in the morning the things you enjoy the most - for me it's reading, writing in my journal, and going on a walk
🟤 Create a small list for your day - if they're all important, then none of them are important

Facebook groups can be a goldmine for your business. It's amazing how many people you can meet and the opportunities there are. However, it can get overwhelming with the number of responses to posts, or feeling like there is too much competition.

This Facebook group strategy is a powerful way to get leads, engage with ideal clients, and make $$$! Let's dig into them:

1️⃣ Post daily in 5-7 Facebook groups that you know are full of your ideal clients. Provide value, educate, and ENGAGE in the comments of your post!

2️⃣ Comment for an hour on other people's posts inside of those same Facebook groups. Provide value, again, engage, see what people are asking or show concern about, this will help you better understand your ideal clients.

3️⃣ Promote in the ones that allow it (even if it's specific days), share your stuff, and make sure they know who you are and how to work with you!

I'd be lost without some of my chrome extensions. We all know having a business is hard. So anything that makes it easier, saves time, or automates for me, is a win in my book! Who's with me on that?!

LastPass is a lifesaver because whether it be for clients or new employees in your business, you are going to need to share account login details. But with LastPass, you don't have to hand off that key to your safe, and hope for the best. It securely shares your login information, without actually having to give it out.

There's a lot that they don't tell you about owning your own business. And some lessons are learned the hard way. But some can be shared to save others from learning the hard way, and that's why I'm here today! These productivity tips will help you in the long run, I promise!

1️⃣They say doing the hardest thing first is best. However, if you are struggling to get motivated to start working, I say do the smaller items first. Get them off your list, it starts the engine and I find this tends to get the creative flow going. Give it a try!

2️⃣ Batch your work. If you know you have similar tasks to do, do them together. This will help you stay on that wavelength of getting that specific theme of tasks completed.

3️⃣ Time blocking. This has been CRUCIAL to my productivity. Time blocking and allowing myself to stay focused and on the clock.

I QUIT MY JOB!

That's right - I am a full-time business owner as of today! I couldn't be more excited (and terrified) for what is to come.

No one talks about how scary it is to just talk about having a business, having a 9-5 and a side hustle, and putting everything you have into something.

So if you have a side hustle or a dream of owning a business, I am here to let you know, you got this. It won't be pretty, it might not be fun at first, and you sure as hell won't get any days off - but it's so worth it.

In reality, I have golden retriever energy, I am deeply emotional, and spiritual.

Just because I look "mean" doesn't mean I am.

My point is just because something appears a certain way doesn't mean that it is that way.

Take people's lives for example. Instagram is the highlight reals. They get to decide what everyone sees.

But to be yourself despite looking like a b*tch - that's past the highlight reals.

Just because you can...
- Make your own website
- Create marketing materials
- Keep your own books
- Manage projects
- Plan events
THAT DOESN'T MEAN YOU SHOULD.

Someone can do it better than you; faster than you.

Let's say you value your time at $50 an hour. And it takes you 40 hours to create your website (which is pretty minimal, unless you're a web designer) which is $2,000.

You could find someone to do your site for $2,000 or you can get a template.

Outsourcing allows you to focus on your zone of genius. Time is money - be careful where you spend it.

My top 10 takeaways:
1️⃣ You decide to be happy when you realize that happiness is internal, not external.
2️⃣ Only you can decide what success looks like for YOU. And realize you are living that now.
3️⃣ Being stressed physically ages you and your physical body.
4️⃣ When you live in the gap, it robs you of generosity, gratitude, and appreciate what you have and where you are.
5️⃣ Measure your own progress.
6️⃣ Mental subtraction is a powerful tool to increase gratitude. (The actual thought and feeling of not having something, in your life)
7️⃣ Give yourself 5 minutes in the gap and then move forward.
8️⃣ Measure backwards. Remember how far you have come, not how far you need to go.
9️⃣ What you do during the hour before bed, sets the tone for your entire life.

PRO TIP to elevate your Instagram

Notice how my images match my brand colors? That's intentional.

You can do this yourself or ask your photographer to edit the images to increase your brand colors and decrease other colors, also known as recoloring.

When your images compliment your graphics and overall brand, it creates a subtle consistency and is easier on the eyes.

Why did you pick those colors?

We're all drawn to certain colors, color bias if you will. I love neutrals and mustard yellow. I have tried a million times to steer away and yet, here we are.

This is my color palette.

Some might see boring, but I see a vision.

When you are designing your brand it is important to ask yourself a few questions:
- How do I want to make people feel?
- Who am I trying to attract?
- Does this represent the voice I want my brand to convey?

Colors are just colors if that is all of the thought they have been given, but colors evoke emotion, tell stories, and bring up memories.

FAIL FORWARD

Let's talk about fear. Fear is a tool that was designed by our bodies to keep us safe. Instead of keeping us safe, often we let it hold us down, hold us back, and keep us from our higher purpose. Especially as small business owners, taking that leap is freakin scary.

Maybe that's just me.

A statement that gets me through moments of doubt and the fear of failure is "fail forward". Creativity flows when you aren't afraid to express yourself, and your ideas, and aren't afraid to fail.

Creativity knows no failures.
