Ken Tierney, a well-respected Irishman and longtime Westchester resident, has died aged 98.

When Federal agents arrested five Irishmen in New York in 1972, some of them had never met, and none of them had been to Texas, but eager to satisfy the British government, the five were sent to testify for a grand jury in Fort Worth. Ken emerged as the “intellectual leader” of the group; his actions at the time were described by a contemporary as “heroically brilliant.” The thousands of supporters who rallied for them in 1972-73 were emblematic of the respect Ken and his fellow accused were held in by the Irish-American community.

An American Revolutionary battle, off the coast of Ireland in 1778

24 April 1778 Carrickfergus, Ireland. As Captain John Paul Jones, commanding the 18-gun sloop, the USS Ranger continued his raging through the British Isles. His ship sights a British vessel, HMS Drake, a 20-gun sloop cautiously tacking against the wind toward them in the early morning mist. Jones’s crew of hard and plunder-hungry New Englanders wanted a prize vessel, so Jones taunted the approaching ship, hoping to force the encounter. When the two ships closed, Ranger had the upper hand as Drake’s unstable cannon tilted once powder and shot were rammed home. The forward lean sent most of its rounds into the water, missing Ranger’s hull. Poor preparation of cartridges by the British meant Ranger dominated in musket fire too, which plunged from sailors placed high in her rigging. For an hour, broadsides of cannon balls punched the ship while bullets splattered the deck, toppling sailors at their stations. Drake began losing sails, masts, and yardarms. One by one, crew members dropped, including its Lieutenant, and finally, a shot struck Drake’s commander, Captain George Burton, killing him. Ranger’s guns had blasted Drake’s colors away so she could not strike them. Instead, the senior officer alive desperately waved his hat, screaming for quarter as the pop of muskets and boom of guns drowned his voice. Finally, Ranger ceased firing, and when the thick cloud of smoke began dissolving into the sea breeze, the Continental Navy had its first military prize in British waters. More importantly, John Paul Jones had made a statement.

Opinion piece by John Crawley, author of “The Yank: My Life as a Former US Marine in the IRA” printed in the Irish News today. Crawley will be giving the oration on April 28 at a service remembering Volunteer Patrick O’Callaghan. When O’Callaghan died in 2021, Crawley wrote an obituary for him on The Pensive Quill, stating in part,

“Patrick didn’t share in the delusion that Irish republican objectives would be advanced through British legislation or that a so-called united Ireland rooted in British/Irish identity politics could morph into the republic he fought for. A republic that broke the connection with England and forged a joint civic identity across the sectarian divide. His reputation as a fearless resistance fighter, his vast experience, and his network of contacts made him a potentially dangerous adversary in the eyes of those who understood their career paths lay in defecting from the Republic, not defending it.”
