WASHINGTON (AP) — Angry, frustrated and unable to lead a fractured and unruly Republican majority, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Thursday told the colleagues threatening to oust him: Do it.

The embattled Republican leader essentially dared his hard-right flank to quit holding the risk of a vote to remove him from the job.

If you’re going to do it, go ahead and try, McCarthy told the Republicans behind closed doors.

“File the f——- motion,” McCarthy said, using a profanity for emphasis, according to those in the private meeting.

Biden is accused of lying about his drug use when he bought a firearm in October 2018, a period when he has acknowledged struggling with addiction to crack co***ne, according to the indictment filed in federal court in Delaware.

Two major traffic calming projects are moving along following a 6-1 approval by the Bakersfield City Council Wednesday night to pay for designs of what some of the city’s historically underserved communities could look like someday soon.

“Each of the improvements will enhance the walkability and bikeability of these corridors,” said Ward 2 Councilman Andrae Gonzales. “These are two projects we have been working on for quite some time and it’s something that I’m excited about for these particular areas.”

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Lawyers for impeached Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton began calling witnesses Thursday and Donald Trump came to his defense on social media as a verdict in the historic trial draws closer.

The timing of the former president's reaffirmed support for Paxton, who tried to baselessly help Trump overturn the election in 2020, comes as a jury of mostly Republican senators are on the cusp of deciding whether to remove Paxton from office over charges of corruption and bribery.

Civil rights advocates are up in arms amid an ongoing COVID-19 outbreak at Golden State Annex, an immigrant detention center in McFarland.

A letter, signed by 30 people currently detained at the facility, details “dangerous conditions” they attest are the direct result of negligence by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, or ICE, and GEO Group, the private company that runs the detention center.

Two prominent bills by local elected officials cleared legislative hurdles Wednesday and were sent to Gov. Gavin Newsom's desk.

A bill requiring all state football championship games to be played at a "neutral location" also passed through the California Legislature this week.

State Sen. Melissa Hurtado, D-Bakersfield, introduced the bill after Shafter High School's football team became mired in mud playing for the CIF Division 5-A state title last year.

Close to 100 high school students from across Bakersfield, many dressed in heavy firefighting gear, gathered early Wednesday morning at the football stadium at Independence High.

Their goal? To climb 2,200 stairs in the bleachers, the symbolic equivalent of the 110 stories of the World Trade Center, the famed twin towers that were destroyed in the terror attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

The hijackers killed nearly 3,000, including close to 400 first-responders. It was those heroes the students were there to honor.

State Sen. Shannon Grove's bill seeking harsher penalties for child s*x traffickers cleared the last legislative hurdle and is on the governor's desk.

Senate Bill 14, seeking to classify child s*x trafficker as a serious strike, passed out of the state Senate on concurrence today.

Here is a story we wrote earlier about how this bill roiled California:

A bona fide hullabaloo exploded Thursday over legislation spearheaded by Bakersfield's state Sen. Shannon Grove that seeks to classify trafficking of minors as a serious felony, a policy initiative that

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Olivia Rodrigo is going on tour, and she's bringing the next generation of pop talent — as well as a beloved '90s alt-rock band — with her.

In 2024, Rodrigo will be joined by funk-and-soul up-and-comer Remi Wolf, dark pop princess Chappell Roan, song of the summer contender PinkPantheress and perhaps most surprisingly, the Breeders (fronted by the Pixies' Kim Deal), across a 57-date run.

A former top state oil regulator filed a lawsuit this week alleging he was effectively fired by the Newsom administration for objecting to orders in January that he implement a law that was about to be placed on hold because of an industry-funded voter referendum.

Former State Oil and Gas Supervisor Uduak-Joe Ntuk claims in the suit he was “forced and coerced to resign” nine days after filing a whistleblower complaint that also raised concerns about the legality of a plan to halt all new drilling permits statewide “without statutory authority or regulations.”

Sometimes addiction can make us feel like we're chained to it. Even when our spirit has the ability to soar.

So said Deacon Francis Moore, a center coordinator at St. Vincent de Paul Homeless Center on Baker Street.

Moore should know. He works at the ground-level with homeless individuals — he calls them family — who often struggle with addiction, but come to the center each morning for coffee, breakfast and maybe a shower.

On Tuesday afternoon, Moore led a memorial and prayer service for a regular guest of the center, Preston A. Musquez, 41, who died across the street from the center in east Bakersfield late last month, the result of an apparent drug overdose.

OPINION: Obesity, a growing epidemic in Kern County, has long been recognized as a significant health concern. However, the current Medicare policy that excludes coverage for anti-obesity medications is not only outdated but also discriminatory. It's time for Congress to act and pass the Treat and Reduce Obesity Act to address this issue and promote health equity while saving millions of dollars for the health care system.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Five former Memphis police officers were charged Tuesday with federal civil rights violations in the beating death of Tyre Nichols as they continue to fight second-degree murder charges in state courts arising from the killing.

Tadarrius Bean, Desmond Mills, Demetrius Haley, Emmitt Martin and Justin Smith were indicted in U.S. District Court in Memphis. The four-count indictment charges them with deprivation of rights under the color of law through excessive force and failure to intervene, and through deliberate indifference; conspiracy to witness tampering; and obstruction of justice through witness tampering.

The mastermind leading seven people to submit more than 400 false California Employment Development Department claims, collecting millions for luxury vehicles and jewelry, carried out his plan while locked up in Tehachapi's California Correctional Institution by tracking everything on hard-copy ledgers, according to federal prosecutors.

Telvin Breaux, 31, pleaded guilty Monday to two counts of aggravated identity theft and a single count of conspiracy to commit mail fraud. The EDD could have distributed nearly $25 million of taxpayers' money if each of the 400 claims were approved, a news release from the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Eastern District said, but only $5.4 million was handed out of which some wasn't distributed to the defendants.

Kern farmers took in 7% less money from crop sales last year than they did in 2021, according to a new county report that people in the industry interpreted Monday as a wake-up call about risks to the local economy.

The decline following a 9% increase in 2021 was a rare instance of local grower receipts falling from one year to the next. It reflects financial harm from low commodity prices and impacts from limited water supplies during what was an unusually hot year.

OPINION: Regarding the recent vandalism of a retail store in Bakersfield, I send my regrets to those many businesses in every part of our city affected by lawlessness taking place in our society today.

As one of seven Bakersfield City Council members, I believe my work and record should benefit all people in Bakersfield, as well as the people in the southwest part of Bakersfield, Ward 6, which elected me.

A constituent in my council ward recently had back-to-back break-ins and applied for a Business Security Improvement grant that others in Bakersfield have successfully obtained to help add protection like security lights, cameras, etc., but they were denied by our government. Why?
