DC New 52, Batman Volume 1: The Court of Owls
Collected Trade Paperback

In 2011 DC rebooted their universe with Flashpoint, basically throwing out all the established canon from the past in favor of a clean slate to tell fresh stories.
Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo are the writer and illustrator for the entire New 52 run of Batman. This is a power couple made in the stars and I've eaten up most of what the duo writes.
THIS ISSUE, was my first comic purchase when I decided to start collecting them. I decided Batman is a great starting place, expanded to the Bat Family (Like Nightwing and Batgirl), then the Justice League, then the JL members' expanded side characters (Like Superman's Super Family of Supergirl, Superboy, Green Lantern and the Corps and New Guardians spin offs, etc)
Snyder's Batman is a master class in drama and balances a good bit of subterfuge and mystery with classic batman epic storytelling. The Court of Owls are a mysterious sect who controls Gotham from the shadows, so shrouded that Batman didn't believe they existed. But now, they're revealing themselves. And Gotham will never be the same again.

I give this comic a 9.3/10, Greg Capullo makes amazing art, and Snyder and Capullo have proven time and time again they know Batman backwards, forwards, and inside out. The Easter Eggs and connections made in these comics relate to so much of Batman's history that I still pick this copy up every couple months to re-read.

Interested in continuing the Court of Owls storyline? The Court puts a new plan into motion in Volume 2: The Night of Owls. There is a collected edition for the tie-ins in Bat Family books and All-Star Western (starring Jonah Hex). If you want to read the whole event, I can find that book for a small fee!

In 2011, DC wanted to reboot their lore-heavy Post-Crisis continuity in favor of fresh, new takes on superhero mainstays while incorporating other imprints into their own fold. This event led the Wildstorm Universe, DC Post-Crisis Universe, and Vertigo Universe combining to form the New 52.

I chose this comic as my page's first post because this is the comic event that created the New 52, the majority of my comic collection. This is my collection's "Big Bang", and if there's anywhere to start a story, it'll be here.
Barry Allen, the Fastest Man Alive, has woke up in a world where his mother is alive. That's not odd... Except she died years ago, when he was but a child! That's far from the only difference in this new world, though, as Barry will find out...

This is a little heavy in terms of plot and understanding for a new reader, due to ALL the characters they throw in the story, but this is about an entire world of heroes and villains and how they're different than they should be.

I give this comic a 8.5/10, Geoff Johns is an excellent writer, and the artwork is gorgeous to look at. Great pacing, lots of easter eggs to the wider universe of Flashpoint.
