Sidewalk Cinema Review: Good One
By Nick Adrian

Coming of age films are often momentous and reflective of the big life changes their subjects depict - think the go-to examples of John Hughes’ 80s work or even the Judd Apatow bro-comedies in the early 2000s. What writer/director India Donaldson brings in her debut film, though, is a quiet sincerity; an in-real-time revelation that more coincides with how these events play out in real life. These life-changing stages never feel too eventful, but their lasting effects do.

Her film Good One follows seventeen-year-old Sam (a career-starting turn from newcomer Lily Collias) accompanying her father Chris (James Le Gros) and his friend Matt (Danny McCarthy) on a weekend camping trip. Both men are still recovering from their respective divorces and are not sure how to handle their current familial situations - Matt’s son refuses to join them on the trip when he was originally slated to go, Chris is remarried to a much-younger woman who has given him a newborn. Sam has a girlfriend and a plan for college, but her problems never seem quite as important as the two dads’ midlife crises. As they navigate through the woods, Sam gradually realizes her role in the trip is more in the realm of caretaker than daughter, Matt even referring to her as the titular “good one” during a drunken moment.

Donaldson’s film is slow and delicate; she takes time in the woods and never brings central conflict toward the front. This gives the film an uneasy edge throughout its relatively quick runtime, bringing to life the awkward feeling of the elephant of the room but never daring to dramatize it. She highlights the woman’s journey into adulthood: Sam does the majority of the packing, putting up and taking down the tent, cradling the two men’s fragile egos. It’s a coming of age story in a much realer sense - that slow realization that this is the direction the rest of your life is headed, no matter which path you’d like to turn down. She crafts this in a beautiful, serene light, letting the peaceful tranquility of nature take hold and almost lulling the audience into a sense of security. Just as we get comfortable, a new problem/conflict has presented itself.

Good One is playing at the Sidewalk Cinema September 6 - 12. Tickets are available at sidewalkfest.com/tickets.

Whether you are a breast cancer patient, survivor, or someone who loves one, Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center is here to help. We know that being diagnosed with breast cancer in Alabama is especially hard. As one of only 11 states that has chosen not to expand Medicaid and with the closing of 7 rural hospitals (with 16 more on the brink), Alabamians are being forced to travel an average of 90 miles each way for chemo, radiation, and surgery, and to rely on nonprofits to provide them with access to cancer healthcare and resources. Forge does just that - we step into the void, providing individualized supportive services to anyone impacted by breast cancer in Alabama. No matter where you live in Alabama, Forge is there for you. And for your loved ones, too.
Forged in collaboration and sustained by community, Forge began in 2014 as the Breast Cancer Survivorship Rehabilitation Initiative (BCSRI), an initiative of the Women’s Breast Health Fund of the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham. Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center was launched in 2016 as a unique collaborative pilot project of the Women’s Breast Health Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham and the four major health care systems in central Alabama: Ascension St. Vincent’s, UAB Health System, Brookwood Baptist Health, and Grandview Medical Center. Its purpose was to provide wrap-around supportive services within the breast cancer community.
In 2020, Forge was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization as Forge Survivorship Center but continues to do our work as Forge Breast Cancer Survivor Center. Forge offers strength by creating personalized survivorship plans and pairing clients with volunteer mentors to listen and accompany them to appointments; provides resources such as health and wellness classes, professional mental health counseling and gas cards for transportation to appointments; and works to build a community of survivors and volunteers to Forge a new future together.

, established in 1983, fosters a nurturing environment and delivers comprehensive services tailored to address the diverse needs of men experiencing chronic homelessness—leading the state in serving this population. Operating as a low-barrier shelter, we welcome individuals with significant housing challenges, offering accommodations based on active efforts to transition out of homelessness rather than imposing strict criteria.

Shelter addresses various inequities through workshops on AIDS awareness, health clinics, GED courses, literacy classes, employment counseling, life skills training, job placement, and a therapeutic fine arts program. One of our most significant contributions is our medical respite program, providing a humane discharge plan for homeless men who are too sick to live on the street but not sick enough to be hospitalized. Firehouse is the only shelter in Alabama and one of only eight in the country funded by the CDC to offer this vital service.

In addition to our comprehensive services, Firehouse Ministries provides overnight shelter and housing for homeless men throughout Birmingham, including permanent supportive housing for men with serious mental illness. Our day program offers a meal, a shower, and clean clothing to anyone in need.

Committed to serving the most vulnerable members of Jefferson County’s homeless population, our approach emphasizes person-centered case management, ensuring dignity and respect for each individual. We prioritize assistance for those facing barriers such as mental illness or substance use, extending support even when other agencies are unable to do so.

CCR Architecture & Interiors worked with UAB to create a new UAB Early Learning Center, a childcare facility for the university's faculty and staff. Operated by the university to offer employees quality on-campus childcare, UAB’s Early Learning Center expanded its offerings through a new facility designed to accommodate over 200 children. The new single-story facility doubled the number of children the previous center served and increased the capacity for infants from 10 to 44.
Centered around an outdoor playground and indoor play area, the design includes separate spaces for infant, toddler, and preschool age children.
CCR was founded in 1996 by Tammy Cohen and has since grown into a 20-person team with 6 managing partners. Despite growth and diversification of talents over the years, they have remained committed to staying a small, responsive firm that focuses on providing unique, customized design solutions.
