Wrapped a two day shoot with Wellworker llc documenting plugging Orphan Wells. Paul Mihalik is the Owner and Jennifer Matlak Cirincione was the B-camera operator.

Orphan wells are oil and gas wells that have been left abandoned and can leak methane and toxins into the environment. Plugging them stops this from happening. Recently Ohio has been investing in this program to plug more of these wells, and contractors can capitalize on this opportunity by going through the Landowner Grant Program. More information for this is on the website for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

Rather than explaining to potential clients the process of plugging one of these wells, Paul is going to send them to the video, saving him time and personalizing the experience for the client.

In a digital world, every business should have professional headshots they can use online.

Here are some I took of Melissa Neubeck! I used one light for the majority of it, the F22c through 216. A tube light bounced into the wall provided a bit of fill at times. Shot on the longer end of the Sigma 18-35 and the wider end of the Canon 70-200.

For shooting these in a short amount of time, I’m pretty happy with how they turned out!

Some BTS from a product shoot last Sunday.

Lighting setup: An Aputure 600d Pro bouncing into a 8x8 Ultrabounce, and 2 40inch foam boards for fill. A 2x3 cutter helped to keep some of the spill off of the background. A 1x1 silver reflector cut from insulation board added a nice kick to the top right side of the cans. An Aputure 60x at 2700K with another CTO added was used to uplight the backdrop. Since we filmed during the day, we used two 40x40 floppies to flag off some of the light from outside coming from behind the backdrop and a set of windows left of the setup.

Since we were filming in a smaller space, it probably would've been wiser to use something like a silk with either a grid or floppies to control the spill light better rather than a bounce, but the UB is what we had on hand, so that is what we used. The main concern was to not wash out the background orange with the bounced light.

We ended up putting a black paper backdrop on the table, and putting some glass over it. It added a nice touch with the reflection of the cans in the glass. Thanks to Youssef Ragae and Jennifer Matlak Cirincione for helping with the setup and filming.

We just wrapped two shoots this weekend, one on Saturday and the other on Sunday. On Friday, Matt Petrunak, Jackson Clark and Andrew prepped the BMPCC 6K Pro at Cleveland Camera Rental.

We outfitted the camera with Contact Zeiss lenses, a Teradek Bolt 4K LT 750, and Schneider FSND filters. More BTS to come.

Here's another timelapse we shot last month. Mostly as a test more than anything with my BMPCC 4K in timelapse mode and the Laowa 7.5mm f/2. In my experience from a sharpness perspective, it seems like the sweet spot for this lens is between f/4 and f/8.

I set the exposure for the highlights and let the rest of the image fall where it needed to be.

A slower shutter and some ND would've helped add some motion blur... maybe I'll use the 6K Pro with internal NDs in the next one. In post, I pushed the blues in the sky more towards cyan. Enjoy!

Recently we filmed a timelapse. By manually stopping down the aperture while the sun was rising, the highlights in the sky wouldn’t clip. In postproduction we smoothed those areas out.

Since we’ve been filming a lot of 4K and 6K Blackmagic RAW and ProRes, we realized that the 14 terabyte drives that we’ve bought every few years for storage wasn’t a sustainable option to continue with.

The solution: a RAID array.

This array has the option to hold up to eight hard drives, for now we will be using six 14TB WD drives. This gives us 84TB of space. Since we plan to set it up in a RAID 5 Configuration, which uses one of the drives for parity, one of the drives can fail and the data can be replicated on a fresh hard drive. That means that we will have 70TB of useable data.

The library documentary itself was 1TB, not to mention the other projects that we’ve worked on this year.

Note: Taking the external hard drives out of their original enclosure voids the warranty, so do it at your own risk.

While filming for a larger documentary piece, we were able to source footage to produce two 30-second commercials for Westlake Porter Public Library. One was a general ad for the library, and this one is a call to action to vote for any future levy.

For not having these videos in mind originally when filming the footage, I am pretty happy with how they turned out!

I recently filmed and lit a music video for the band Dying Desolation. Early on, Gabe Gazic, who wrote the script, directed, and edited the video, mentioned that he wanted the focus of this video to be the narrative, and have the performance shots be intercut. After reading the script and listening to the song several times, I created a detailed shot list that included the locations, scenes, lens to be used, camera movement, lighting setups, and more. We used this as a guide when filming and it helped to make us more efficient on set.

For the exterior scenes we filmed when it was overcast for a soft ambient light, and golden hour for a warm glow. For the interior performance work, I backlit with 4 Lekos rented from Cleveland Camera Rental. The hard backlight helped to create an edgy look that I thought fit the tone of the song. For the medium performance shots, we moved one of the Lekos more frontal and added some diffusion to get some more level on the band member’s faces. The bedroom and bathroom scenes were primarily lit with the Aputure 200x with the Lantern and 120d 2.

Something else that was mentioned in pre-production was constant camera movement. Along with the quick editing, this helped give the video an energetic feeling. Gabe had some specific shots in mind, and we alternated in operating the camera. Most of the time the camera was on a shoulder rig, but a gimbal and tripod were also used.

Thank you to Dave Tarbert for arranging for us to use the auditorium location for filming and Business Partner Jennifer Matlak Cirincione for transportation. James Perkins was the designated BTS Photographer, and I grabbed a few stills as well.

The band was able to have high energy throughout the performances and I’m pretty happy with the final result! The actors Willa Jones and Sam Jerome Jerman did a great job as well.

Modern Video Productions is currently in production for a documentary for the 50th anniversary of Friends of the Westlake Porter Public Library! It features several important people from Friends over the years.

Thank you to Donald Gregory from Cleveland Camera Rental for bringing his expertise as the gaffer for these interviews, and bringing the grip truck! It really elevated the look of these interviews.

For the majority of the setups we put 2 to 3 Litepanels Astras 6x into a 6x6 or 8x8 diffusion frame as the key light. We used 2-3 4x4 floppies to help control the spill light from the overheads and to create contrast on the shadow side of the face. We also used an Aputure 200x with barn doors or an Astera Helios Tube as our background and backlights.

Looking back on the shoot there are a couple of things I might have done differently but overall I’m happy with how these interviews turned out!
