The Bologna Children's Book Fair moves to an online event for the second time in a row.



BolognaFiere recently announced that the Bologna Children's Book Fair, usually held in April, has been postponed to June 14–17 and will not be a "live," in-person event as they had hoped. It will be moved instead to an online event for a second year in a row.



BolognaBookPlus is another upcoming event that will be running parallel to the acclaimed Bologna Children’s Book Fair, aiming to reach a wider professional audience across the global publishing industry. This year, in line with BCBF, it’s an online-only event, comprising a one-day industry conference, a rights training course, a translation forum, publisher pitches, and a self-publishing conference.



Both the Bologna Children’s Book Fair and the BolognaBookPlus will take place LIVE on ZOOM. Recordings of the live events can be purchased at a specified price.



In addition, the new Global Rights Exchange platform is about to be launched, offering a range of functions for publishers and agents as well as a licensing section.

Independent bookstores are on the rise.

One of the most interesting—and unexpected—trends over the last decade is the resurgence of independent bookstores across the U.S.

After most mom and pop bookstores were assumed dead in the 1990s with the rise of mega bookstores like Borders and Barnes & Noble, the data now tells a much different story.

What this trend means for publishers:

While retail may not fully shape business strategy on the publishing side, this surge in corner bookstores is significant.

For one, it may indicate a deeper relationship that many readers have with books. A significant segment of readers is still interested in the experience of buying and sharing new works.

Chains rarely offer the experience that these consumers crave.

As broader retail trends demonstrate, consumers are shifting away from generic, big-box stores. Small shops differentiate themselves from online shopping by offering more authentic, human interaction.

Publishers can take advantage of this by investing in relationships and community-building around their titles, targeting independent bookstores as a hub to build deeper connections, as well as brand and author loyalty.
