Two days ago, I attended a webinar that really impressed me. The speakers were Mark Weatherford and the CEO of BLACKCLOAK, Dr. Chris Pierson. Both of these men are brilliant! It inspired me to write an article about the expanding role of executive protection agents and the evolution of our industry.

To summarize, the personal digital lives of key executives have become another battleground for threat actors. Most corporate security teams do great work when it comes to protecting the company from physical and digital threats while everyone is in the building working; however, it's when these key executives use their personal digital devices outside the workplace that have made them the most vulnerable to attack.

When personal digital information is hacked, executives can face physical, financial, reputational, and emotional harm. We do NOT want that. So, why not try to prevent these attacks from ever happening? Here are some thoughts:

Our favorite discreet pepper spray is called the Sabre Red "lipstick" pepper spray. It looks like lipstick or a travel-sized perfume. It's cute, compact, and discreet. Each dispenser contains 12 bursts with a range of 10 feet; so if there is more than one attacker, you will be better prepared.

This particular formula contains a UV marking dye. This dye stains clothing and skin, making identifying an attacker much easier than ever before.

Pepper spray is a great self-defense weapon for women. Pepper spray is small, easy to use, doesn't require much training, and it also a non-lethal weapon.

Three common question we get all the time, especially from civilian women interested in the EP field, are:

"Do you need to have a military background to be an EP agent?"
"Will Executive Protection agencies hire someone without military experience?"
"Do people with a law enforcement/military background get hired more in EP?"
The answers are:

No
Yes
It depends on the individual.
Before we begin, lets boil this all down to what security agents are and are not ultimately responsible for doing when working security details.

They aren't responsible for carrying their client's shopping bags.
They aren't responsible for arresting criminals.
They aren't responsible for planning an attack on an adversary.

A while back, when FEPG was discussing the best pocket knife to be used on details, we talked about reliability, versatility, and design. We agreed the knife needed to be effective for EP details as well as on ordinary tasks like cutting a thread off of a garment. As many of you know, little tasks like these pop up significantly more than SHTF ones do.

We decided our favorite folding knife to use on EP details and in everyday life is the Spyderco Para Military 2 pocket knife.

It is made of stainless steel described as "CPM S45VN", which has been formulated to offer improved corrosion and wear resistance. Before choosing the Para Military 2 Knife, we noted that many other Spyderco knives are made from S30V steel, which is definitely a high-quality steel, but the S45VN is a little tiny step up.

The Spyderco Para Military 2 knife has a G10 handle. This simply means that the handle is made from a synthetic blend of woven fiberglass fabric that had been soaked in epoxy resin and then compressed and baked. This allows the handle to be strong and durable while also being lightweight and easy to handle.

The lock on the knife is a compression lock. Spyderco has patented its compression lock, one that creates a high-strength, user-friendly locking mechanism. The lock is something ultra important in a folding knife. The last thing an agent would want is to have a knife that malfunctions when needed most.
