We'd like to remind residents that Henderson County is currently under a burn ban. Please, stay safe during this time of increased wildfire activity.
The County has a current Keetch-Byram Drought Index value of 721. The Keetch-Byram Drought Index (KBDI) is maintained by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Texas A&M Forest Service and is used to determine fire potential.. The scale goes up to 800 and a burn ban is suggested when the KBDI is 575.
Most of our region is dry, prompting the Texas A&M Forest Service to raise the Fire Preparedness Level up this week to Level 4, the second highest level. Level 4 is described as, "The fire environment will support increased wildfire activity and a heavy commitment of state and local resources for long durations is likely required. Continued mobilization of interagency resources and the activation of incident management teams may occur."
Please continue to be safe and careful.

Officials at the Athens Police Department want to alert residents of a recent scam attempt.
A resident reported receiving a phone call Tuesday night from someone claiming to be from the APD. The phone number showed as the Athens Police Department. The caller told the resident they had used their phone to transmit a photo that traumatized a child. The caller told the resident the complaint could be eliminated if they sent several hundred dollars.
The Athens Police Department reminds residents that no officer would ever request payment over the phone and never to give out personal information or money to unknown individuals.
If you receive a suspicious call, hang up and contact the police immediately. Scammers often use fear and intimidation tactics to pressure individuals into giving them money, but remember, you have the power to protect yourself. Stay vigilant and stay safe.
