🎙️ New Shed Geek Podcast Episode Just Dropped!

Today, we're talking with Darren Warren of Stor-Mor Outdoor Products—someone who’s proving that you don’t have to race to the bottom on price to win in this industry.

While a lot of builders are cutting corners, Darren and his team are raising the bar by focusing on standards, not shortcuts. In this episode, he shares how Stor-Mor is building trust through consistent quality, lightning-fast quotes, clean and organized facilities, and a true partnership model that stretches across 26 states.

We dig into the real reasons some segments struggle with installer turnover—and why fair pay, solid training, and a coaching culture are the real keys to long-term success. Darren also shares a fresh take on permitting—not as a headache, but as a service that actually builds value for customers.

And beyond the business, there’s heart. Darren opens up about the company’s support for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and how that purpose drives the team in a much bigger way than just hitting revenue goals.

If you’re serious about building better—better systems, better service, better teams—you’re going to want to hear this one.

A lot of builder's chase price. We decided to chase standards. We’re joined by Darren Warren of Stor-Mor Outdoor Products to break down a simple but uncommon...

David Goggins,I’ve listened to so many of your books on audio. I’ve watched you on several podcast. Driving through Indiana today, saw this, and thought of you. If you ever give me an opportunity to interview you, that would be truly amazing. I love what you do man!

I have not edited or even listened back to this but we’re going to let it fly. We have already contacted Ezra and we are lining up transportation to get the cooler to Rockville, IN next week. Thank you for all who stopped by the booth and visited with us. Back to real life now!

We didn’t take the picture because we didn’t have everyone together at the beginning, and, we didn’t have everyone together at the end, but we took it anyway. We’re missing a few here, probably because they were busy working or networking which is what they do best.

It’s a wrap for Shed Week 2025! It’s one to remember. If I start naming names or stories shared I’ll be sure to accidentally leave someone out. Just know that all of the conversations, and booth visits were appreciated. I hope you felt heard, I hope you had a good experience, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

The booth was hopping yesterday. Hopefully we can have that same energy today!

I know I’m generally a talker, but I hope to write something of significance here this morning.

First: Peter Miller, I’m proud of you. I can remember sticking my neck out there wearing a silly outfit and doing a podcast, just talking from the heart about things I love. I heard it all, from “it’ll never work,” to “I’ll pay you for it.” Within the first year I heard, “I was gonna do this,” to “here’s what I would do different.” Stay the coarse brother, this years Shed Sales Summit was pretty awesome and I’m confident it’ll just continue to grow and get better and better.

Second: JMAG, and any other participants on the NSRA committee, WOW, what a great lineup and overall excellent 2 years the experience has been for those attending the NSRA. We became a member this year, and in particular recognition; Kyle Summers your efforts don’t go unrecognized by those attending, even if you do look silly in that headset you were wearing around the whole time, 😆. It’s been good laughing with you over the last few days. I sure missed that, and what do you say; it’s about time for you to revisit the mic for an episode and give us a WOO, it’s long overdue. Consider this your invitation if you’d be willing?

Third: Marty, Debbie, Matt and the team at SBJ, and the Expo, I appreciate your kind words over the last few days. Shed Week is officially here and you guys are knocking it out of the park. Biggest event ever so far, or so it feels. If folks are not here because they simply can’t be, I totally understand, but for those who choose not to be, they are really missing out. By the way, that includes vendors, this is the best networking Shed event of the year, hands down.

Fourth: my team, all who have been involved with Shed Geek in any capacity. My wife, my son, my daughter, and literally every other one of you, I
have just one message: “the anchor holds.”

Fifth: Those who voted for me to receive the “Shed of Honor” award, thank you. I don’t say this with false humility, but I’m simply not good at receiving recognition. It’s a personal thing for me, that extends from my youth, and I’m surprisingly still a bit introverted to be honest in spite of what you see. I’m suprised I didn’t cry my eyes out on stage. That you would consider me worth nominating means the world to me as I have poured myself into this industry the last 5 years in particular but even the last 12 of my life. Also, congratulations to Sam Byler and Richard Miller for their awards, they have been great friends along this journey and deserved that public recognition.

Sixth: This is maybe the one taking up so much space in my mind. The hugs, the memes, the private text, emails, phone calls, gifts, the poems, and the support so many of you have offered privately in the last few weeks are simply overwhelming. “We are a common people.” This is the phrase I have stuck in my mind. I didn’t grow up “common” but my do I feel the love from the culture. Who knew that saying and doing less, can lead to so much more. In the middle of the show floor yesterday I spent 30 minutes talking with two lovely people about conscientious objection. We weren’t talking sheds, we weren’t discussing competition or even allies. We were talking about how to be more like Jesus and how to make the world better, an area, we all admitted was something needing approved upon in each of our lives. It has been my favorite moment so far. Although we often get it wrong, it is the reality that we don’t give up, we try to do better next time, and we simply keep going.

Sorry for the heavy post this morning. I’m actually in a really good mood, 😆. Looking forward to seeing you all today if you are in Knoxville, and looking forward to the next year of everything the shed industry has for us.

I’ve probably consumed more Charlie Kirk content than 75% of people. He is an Illinoisan, one I could be proud of for a change.

Many companies have explained to me they take an apolitical or agnostic approach to media, even small media that is industry specific. Sort of an overall “lukewarm” approach. So be it. I hope I never arrive at this conclusion.

Charlie Kirk was a loud Christian, a family man, a podcaster, a media personality and so much more.

I love free speech. I love to listen to a multitude of opinions on different things. I embrace differing opinions and commonly welcome them just as I learned to do from folks like Charlie. He helped give me the confidence to be brave enough to do that. Part of my speech is to be transparent on my small platform in which I operate by using real life experiences to serve as a dialogue to be entertaining and educational. I feel like that’s something Charlie would encourage. Lord knows he helped me to be more brave, by setting the example.

I often refer to Socrates on the show. I’ve heard the same comparison of Charlie to that of Socrates many times today. When you work with the youth, you are shaping ideas through conversation. He did so by raising his intellect and theirs too. He raised his argument and challenged theirs. He did so in nonviolence and he had a right to life and free speech.

Communication is so detrimental to the fundamental beliefs that drive our nation and our media. I don’t recognize him as a “celebrity.” He just seemed like a reasonable guy who produced content that I enjoyed listening to. He gave others a mic to agree or disagree. Then he was killed for it.

One comment I read earlier said if they’ll kill the son of God then Charlie Kirk is not safe, and neither are you. If they’ll free Barrabis yet condem Jesus then how safe is the moral high ground.

As Christians and conservatives we are often taught to be meek, consciously object to violence, and turn the other cheek. I sometimes struggle with that. I think a lot of us do.

Charlie Kirk, you left such an impact on this world. Go rest high on that mountain, your work on Earth is done. Go to Heaven a shouting, love for the father and the son!
