📍Step into the past and stroll through the history of Longitude Lane! 🕰️⚓️⬇️
Measuring approximately 540 feet long and just over ten feet wide, this historic alleyway pays homage to a popular conversation topic In 1714: “The Longitude Act”, an initiative ratified by British parliament offering £20,000 sterling to anyone who could demonstrate a reliable and accurate method of determining longitude at sea.
For half a century later, the longitude prize was a popular point of conversation in the English-speaking world, particularly in the maritime industry. Charleston, being a port city, took part in such conversation.
Formerly referred to as “neighborhood alley”, a local liquor shop owner, George Bedon, first coined the name of the alley as “Longtitude Lane” in a newspaper ad for his shop. Local scholars believe that George Bedon, used “Longitude” as a buzzword from the popular conversation topic to attract customers to his shop by capitalizing on the word’s novelty.
