O Canada! It’s time to celebrate Canada Day, observed on Monday, July 1, 2024. Do you know why Canada Day is celebrated? Is it similar to Independence Day (U.S.)?

Congratulations to my Calgary family back in Edmonton. The Oilers almost pulled it off after a strong comeback effort of the Edmonton Oilers after being down 3-0 in the Stanley Cup Final came to an end. The Florida Panthers pulled out a thrilling Game 7 win to become NHL champs in 2024. In what was the longest NHL season to date. It was a fitting finale after a series of fierce battles between two of the NHL's elite teams. See you next season!

CONDOLENCES to the great Louis Cameron Gossett Jr. Gossett was the first Black man to win a supporting actor Oscar and an Emmy winner for his role in the seminal TV miniseries “Roots,” has died today in Santa Monica. He was 87. Born in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City, he had his stage debut at the age of 17. Shortly thereafter, he successfully auditioned for the Broadway play Take a Giant Step. Gossett became the third Black Oscar nominee in the supporting actor category in 1983. He won for his performance as the intimidating Marine drill instructor in “An Officer and a Gentleman” opposite Richard Gere and Debra Winger. He also won a Golden Globe for the same role.

FYI: In August 1969, Gossett had been partying with members of the Mamas and the Papas when they were invited to actor Sharon Tate’s house. He headed home first to shower and change clothes. As he was getting ready to leave, he caught a news flash on TV about Tate’s murder. She and others were killed by Charles Manson’s associates that night.

A BLACK HISTORY MONTH MOMENT. Sending a HUGE tribute to the JAPANESE Who Saw More Than Color. Yasuke a tall African man, arrived in Japan in 1579 and made history as the first foreign-born man to become a samurai warrior. Yasuke was originally a slave from Mozambique and was brought to Japan by Portuguese traders. The powerful Japanese warlord Oda Nobunaga was fascinated by Yasuke's tall stature and dark skin, and upon seeing him, ordered his servants to try and rub the "black ink" off his skin. Despite this strange encounter, Nobunaga took Yasuke into his service, granting him a sum of money, a house, and a katana. From then on, Yasuke loyally served Nobunaga as an honored samurai, fighting alongside him in fierce battles. He went from being a piece of Portuguese property to a member of the Japanese elite.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY… Israel Celebrates 74 Years of Independence. Because Israel declared independence on 14 May 1948, which corresponded with the Hebrew date 5 Iyar in that year, Yom Ha'atzmaut was originally celebrated on that date. However, to avoid Sabbath desecration, it may be commemorated one or two days before or after the 5th of Iyar if it falls too close to the Jewish Sabbath. Yom Hazikaron, the Israeli Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terrorism Remembrance Day is always scheduled for the day preceding Independence Day.

In the Hebrew calendar, days begin in the evening and Independence Day is this observed from nightfall until the following evening of the designated day.[2] The most recent occurrence of Yom Haatzmaut took place from sunset to sunset, 14-15 April 2021.

*It is not enough to pin the blame on others, to say this is a problem of one section of the country or another, or deplore the fact that we face. A great change is at hand, and our task, our obligation, is to make that revolution, that change, peaceful and constructive for all. Every child should have an equal right to develop their talent and their ability and their motivation, to make something of themselves.
*Those who do nothing are inviting shame. Those who act boldly are recognizing right as well as reality.

Hollywood has lost another Icon. Sir Sidney Poitier: Hollywood trailblazer dies aged 94. We all sit on his shoulders.

Sidney Poitier, whose elegant bearing and principled onscreen characters made him Hollywood's first Black movie star and the first Black man to win the best actor Oscar, has died. He was 94.
