Interested to see everyone’s early predictions for AHSAA wrestling this season 👀

Here’s my way too early predictions:

7A - Huntsville

I think this is a super close team race this year; with both Vestavia losing 8 seniors and Thompson 4, I give the dual state championship team the edge as they only lose 1 qualifier.

6A - Mortimer Jorden

Only losing 2 seniors MJ has a very good chance to end back up on top in another competitive 6A year.
McAdory, the defending champions, lose almost half of their squad but will still have chances to repeat. Gardendale loses Isaiah Powe but only 1 other senior and I would not be shocked if they ended up back on top. Mountain Brook loses 4 but the returners lead me to believe they are a dark horse for this season.

5A - Jasper

The returning champs do lose some heavy hitters but I think they will make up for the lost points in some of the younger guys stepping up.
Behind state champions Stewart and Staton Scottsboro will have a veteran squad where they only finished a couple matches behind Jasper last season and will look to reverse that, this could again come down to the last round.
Arab loses big points but you can never count them too far out of the race.

1-4A - New Hope

I’m going out on a limb from my statistics here, I believe Ashville, Weaver, Oak Grove, JP2, and others have legitimate shots at winning but I’m giving it to the underdogs here. New Hope returns most of their team and although losing a state runner up hurts, championships can be won on the backside.

Girls - Daphne

Sparkman upsetting Daphne last year shocked me. However I can’t in good conscience put any other team as the favorite this year.

My individual rankings will be updated in the coming weeks, be on the look out.

My 5a and 6a brackets are busted with Scottsboro and McAdory falling in the first round.
This is why predictions don’t mean a whole lot - the kids still have to go compete and anything can happen!

I love this time of year.

I’m not saying I’m good at predicting things but I predicted Huntsville to beat Vestavia Hills 40-28 and they won 40-24 🤷🏼‍♂️

Out of 48 potential spots for the State Duals Shanks Ranks only missed 5 teams - teams that I didn’t predict to make their bracket, that did - during my prediction podcast:

1. Ashville (don’t know how I overlooked this one)
2. Orange Beach
3. Beauregard
4. Saraland
5. Benjamin Russell
*Mae Jemison (I intentionally leave my teams/guys out of rankings/predictions as to not be biased so I don’t count this one)

Congratulations to those teams for beating the odds!

I had a few that had mixed results within the brackets (results who I thought would win but lost to who I thought would runner-up) but I’ll take the 90% correct prediction rate! 🤣

I will be live tomorrow night to talk in-depth predictions now that the brackets are set.

In the event a kid has not wrestled I went by the listed weight class in Track which is not always accurate.
