The Million Dollar Highway is a scenic stretch of U.S. Route 550 that runs through the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado, United States. This segment, about 25 miles (40 kilometers) long, connects the picturesque towns of Ouray and Silverton.

It’s famous for its breathtaking views of mountains, valleys, and canyons, as well as for its sharp curves and cliffside stretches without guardrails—earning it a reputation as one of the most beautiful yet dangerous roads in America.

The road was originally built in the 19th century to transport minerals from regional mines. The name “Million Dollar Highway” has several origin stories: some say it came from the cost of construction—one million dollars per mile in the 1920s—while others believe it’s because of the gold ore used as fill under the road.

This stretch is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, a 236-mile scenic loop through southwestern Colorado that offers stunning views and access to outdoor adventures. The road is open year-round, but due to weather conditions and the risk of avalanches, caution is advised—especially in winter.

La Million Dollar Highway es un tramo escénico de la carretera U.S. Route 550 que atraviesa las montañas San Juan en el suroeste de Colorado, Estados Unidos. Este segmento, de aproximadamente 25 millas (40 kilómetros), conecta las pintorescas ciudades de Ouray y Silverton. Es famoso por sus impresionantes vistas de montañas, valles y cañones, así como por sus curvas pronunciadas y acantilados sin barandillas, lo que le ha valido la reputación de ser una de las carreteras más hermosas y peligrosas de América .  

La carretera fue construida originalmente en el siglo XIX como una ruta para transportar minerales desde las minas de la región. El nombre “Million Dollar Highway” tiene varias teorías de origen: algunos dicen que se debe al costo de construcción de un millón de dólares por milla en la década de 1920, mientras que otros creen que proviene del valor del mineral de oro en el relleno utilizado para construir la carretera .  

Este tramo forma parte del San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, una ruta panorámica de 236 millas que recorre el suroeste de Colorado, ofreciendo vistas espectaculares y acceso a diversas actividades al aire libre. The Workshop of Memories

The sound of metal striking metal, the scent of old oil lingering in the air, and the dim light filtering through the gaps in the roof. In this small workshop in Uruguay, where time seems to have stood still, two souls work in silence, bound by the same love for motorcycles and mechanics.

There is no rush, only patience. Every tightened screw holds a story, every tool hanging on the wall bears the marks of countless days of labor. Here, among wrenches and boxes of spare parts, not only are motorcycles repaired, but memories as well.

Once, it was a father teaching his son the secrets of the engine; today, it is two old friends sharing stories between laughter and grease-stained hands. In these spaces forgotten by the modern world, the value of craftsmanship and camaraderie stands the test of time.

Because beyond the engines that roar back to life, in Peco’s workshop, what truly matters are the moments that remain in the soul.

El Taller de los Recuerdos

El sonido del metal contra el metal, el aroma a aceite viejo impregnando el aire y la luz tenue filtrándose entre los resquicios del techo. En este pequeño taller de Uruguay, donde el tiempo parece haberse detenido, dos almas trabajan en silencio, unidas por el mismo amor por las motocicletas y la mecánica.

No hay prisa, solo paciencia. Cada tornillo ajustado es una historia, cada herramienta colgada en la pared guarda las huellas de incontables jornadas. Aquí, entre llaves inglesas y cajas de repuestos, no solo se reparan motos, sino también memorias.

Fue un padre que enseñó a su hijo los secretos del motor, hoy dos viejos amigos compartiendo anécdotas entre risas y grasa en las manos. En estos espacios olvidados por el mundo moderno, el valor del trabajo artesanal y la camaradería resisten el paso del tiempo.

Porque más allá de los motores que vuelven a rugir, en el taller de Peco, lo que realmente importa son los momentos que permanecen en el alma.

I have always valued my motorcycle for the great journeys we’ve taken together. We’ve crossed borders to Mexico and Canada, and ridden on iconic routes like the Devil’s Backbone, the Tail of the Dragon, the Million Dollar Highway, the Ozarks, and even a segment of the Mother Road. I especially remember that trip to the Keys, a 24-hour ride without rest because I couldn’t find a place to stay. The unparalleled feeling of seeing the "Welcome to Florida" sign when returning from those long trips out of state is something that always fills me with satisfaction.

However, today, as I look at it after an ordinary day, I realize that its true value goes beyond the great trips. In every moment of my life, my motorcycle has been a constant presence, providing me with a refuge and a sense of freedom both on special days and routine ones. The daily commutes, the torrential summer rains, and the familiar routes we’ve traveled together day after day have proven to be as important as the epic adventures. Even though I haven’t always given it the maintenance it deserves, it has never let me down. It’s in that constant reliability and its role as a companion in each of my days where I find its true value.

It’s not my usual route, but I take it when I want to get lost in the journey and enjoy a leisurely ride. I always find it there, in the same spot, unmoved as if time had forgotten it. Its appearance is humble, but the marks on its body tell stories of countless adventures.

It’s an old motorcycle with a sidecar, its faded paint and rusted metal speak of years of service. A spare tire hangs on one side, and the sidecar, though worn, retains a robustness that suggests journeys full of memories.

It peers out at the street with indifference, but its position reveals more than it appears. I often wonder if it still dreams of traveling miles or if it simply rests, satisfied with its legacy.

I would love to rescue it, restore it to its former glory, and free it from the fate of being just an attraction at the workshop where it now rests.

No es mi ruta habitual, pero la tomo cuando quiero perderme en el camino y disfrutar de una rodada tranquila. Siempre la encuentro ahí, en el mismo lugar, inmóvil como si el tiempo la hubiese olvidado. Su apariencia es humilde, pero las marcas en su carrocería cuentan historias de innumerables aventuras.

Es una vieja motocicleta con sidecar, su pintura desvanecida y el metal oxidado hablan de años de servicio. Un neumático de repuesto cuelga de un lado, y el sidecar, aunque desgastado, conserva una robustez que sugiere viajes llenos de recuerdos.

Ella se asoma a la calle con indiferencia, pero su posición revela más de lo que aparenta. A menudo me pregunto si aún sueña con recorrer kilómetros o si simplemente descansa, satisfecha de su legado.

Me encantaría rescatarla, devolverle su antigua gloria y liberarla del destino de ser solo un atractivo en el taller donde ahora descansa.

The road provides an opportunity to get to know people in a way that no other place can. On the road, there is no room for masks or carefully constructed images; it is where the true nature of those who travel it is revealed. The intensity of the journey, the uncertainty of the next mile, and the need to trust others strip away the layers and expose our most authentic selves.

On a motorcycle, this experience is amplified. The shared vulnerability and camaraderie stem from mutual understanding and facing the challenges of the journey together. The people you meet on the road are special, and that connection is so profound that you can only call them brothers. In each encounter, each conversation, and each shared stretch of the journey, indestructible bonds are woven, forged in the crucible of adventure and authenticity. The road, then, becomes a mirror that reflects not only the external landscape but also the internal landscape of each traveler.

La ruta te brinda la oportunidad de conocer a las personas de una manera que ningún otro lugar puede ofrecer. En el camino, no hay espacio para las máscaras ni las imágenes cuidadosamente construidas; es allí donde se revela la verdadera naturaleza de quienes la transitan. La intensidad del viaje, la incertidumbre del próximo kilómetro y la necesidad de confiar en los demás desnudan el alma y dejan al descubierto nuestra esencia más auténtica.
