Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) chief S Somanath on Sunday said NASA scientists were astonished to see the sophisticated technologies Indian space scientists developed at low cost for the Chandrayaan-3 mission and offered to buy them.

A delegation of NASA scientists had visited ISRO headquarters in August 2023, in the run-up to the launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission. They were hugely impressed with the cost-efficient, sophisticated technology developed by Indian scientists to go to the Moon’s south pole.

The ISRO chief, while addressing an event organised by the Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Foundation in Rameswaram to commemorate the 92nd birth anniversary of the late former President, said, “About 5-6 people from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory came (to the Isro headquarters) and we explained to them about Chandrayaan-3 technology. That was before the soft landing took place (on August 23)."

“They just said, ‘We have no comments. Everything is going to be good. They also said, ‘Look at the scientific instruments, they are so beautiful and very cheap. Very easy to build and they are high-technology. How did you build it? Why don’t you sell this to America?'" the ISRO chief was quoted by reports as saying.

“Times have changed. We are capable of building the best of equipment, the best of devices and the best of rockets. That is why our PM Narendra Modi has opened the space sector. Our knowledge and intelligence level in the country is one of the best in the world. India will be a very powerful nation one day. We will be powerful in technology," he said while talking to students. 🇮🇳

An Indian-American couple from Houston has donated USD 1.75 million to start the construction of the first Hindu campsite in Texas, which will hold heritage youth camps every summer.

Subhash Gupta and Sarojini Gupta, who made the mega donation, said they are passionate about the camp because it inculcates critical values and skills in the next generation.“This is the best thing we can do for the next generation," Subhash said.

“We are already losing youth in this country because they are not interested in our Hindu dharma and preserving our value system, so whatever we can do to cultivate that, the better," he said.

The campsite, located on a 37-acre property in Columbus, Texas, will be complete next summer, just in time to welcome campers for a six-night and five-day camp.

An Indian-American student studying in London has decided to choose a career in medicine after the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) medics saved his life after his heart stopped six times.

Atul Rao, from Seattle and a student from Baylor University in Texas, developed a blood clot in his lungs which stopped the blood flow through his heart, a condition called pulmonary embolism, and caused him to go into cardiac arrest.

After he was rushed to London’s Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust Hammersmith Hospital’s heart attack centre, scans confirmed that blood clots in the lungs were blocking the flow of blood from the heart. Recently, Rao returned to the hospital in London with his parents to express his gratitude.

“Before this happened, I was starting to wonder if I was doing the right thing doing medicine and whether I should be going into business instead,” Rao told the NHS medics during the visit last month.

“But the minute I woke up I knew. I want to use my time in a productive way. I want to use my second chance at life by helping others,” he said.

Renowned author, philanthropist and wife of Infosys co-founder N. R. Narayana Murty, Sudha Murty, was conferred with the Global Indian Award by the Canada India Foundation at the biggest Indo-Canadian gala here.

The Global Indian Award, which is worth $50,000, is given each year to a prominent Indian who has made a major mark in his or her chosen field.

“We are so pleased to present the Global Indian Award to Sudha Murty. She has spent her entire career paving the way for future generations to find success in whatever field they choose, and is passionate about giving back to society,” said Canada India Foundation chairman Satish Thakkar.
Accepting the award from Indian High Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Verma, Sudha Murty said, “It is my honour to get this award from your country.”

Thanking the Canada India Foundation (CIF) for choosing her for this award, Murthy said, “The CIF is like Krishna in the Mahabharata. Krishna is the son of Devki as well as Yashoda. Devki was his biological mother and Yashoda brought him up. You are born in India but settled here – that is Yashoda – and your mother is India. You belong to both mothers.”

Lauding the Indo-Canadian diaspora as a bridge between the two countries, she said, “You are the carriers of Indian culture in a different land. Please keep it up.”

As hip-hop turns 50 , Indian-American DJ-producer KSHMR and rapper-producer Raftaar have joined forces for their debut collaboration titled 'Legacy', the third track from KSHMR's much-awaited Indian hip-hop album 'Karam'.

Raftaar showcases his lyrical prowess as he raps about the importance of legacy and how a person should masterfully build towards his legacy for empowerment of future generations.

KSHMR stated: 'Raftaar was at the top of the list of rappers in the Indian scene I wanted to work with. We went back and forth over virtual meetings, where I told him about the concept of my forthcoming album KARAM's storyline and how each track on it tells a different piece of that story. We landed on our song being the last track of the album, a reflection on the main character's death, which I knew Dilin could perfectly execute with his lyrical intensity.

20/09/2023

Indian PM Narendra Modi has invited U.S. President Joe Biden to be chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations on January 26 next year, said U.S. Ambassador Eric Garcetti on September 20. While the U.S. Congress would be in session at the time, Mr. Garcetti said that the invitation is under consideration. Mr. Biden is due to visit India in 2024 for the Quad Summit, and reports have suggested that the government is coordinating with Japanese and Australian governments to try and schedule the Indo-Pacific Quadrilateral grouping’s meeting at the same time.

“During their bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G-20 summit, Prime Minister Modi invited President Biden to visit for January 26. He did not mention the Quad Summit during the meeting, as that has to be coordinated between [all four countries],” Mr. Garcetti said speaking to journalists during an event hosted by the Ananta Centre, where he spoke about “Navigating the Future: A Post-G20 Dialogue on India-U.S. Bilateral Relations”.

This is the third time the Modi government has issued an invitation to the U.S. President for the Republic Day parade, an honour that normally goes to a different country each year.

Apple’s announcement that the ‘made in India’ iPhone 15 will still be priced higher than in the US or Dubai has left many Indian netizens disappointed. The iPhone 15 will cost Rs 79,900 in the US, while the same model will be priced at Rs 66,000 in the US and approximately Rs 77,000 in Dubai. The iPhone 15 Plus will be priced at Rs 89,900 in India, compared to Rs 74,600 in the US and Rs 85,857 in Dubai. The new iPhones will be available in India from September 22.

The netizens expressed their disappointment, questioning the purpose of having the iPhone made in India if it doesn’t result in lower prices. Some suggested that Apple does not pass on the benefits of local manufacturing, assembly, and local parts suppliers to the consumers, and instead, fixes prices based on their revenue in US dollars.

Analysts explained that several iPhone components are still imported after the payment of import duty, and the scale of business in India is much lower compared to the US or Dubai. This could be a reason behind the higher prices of the ‘made in India’ iPhone models.

The impact of AI reached new heights when a concerned mother turned to ChatGPT to seek a diagnosis of her four-year-old child, who had been struggling with a persistent toothache and stunted growth.

The young boy, named Alex, and his mother, Courtney, had suffered a three-year-long medical mystery that involved severe pain and surprising symptoms.

The distressing journey began during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when Alex began chewing on objects, causing him discomfort and prompting his mother to seek medical help. Despite visiting numerous doctors and even an emergency room visit, the source of Alex's suffering remained unknown.

As if the toothache weren't enough, Alex's growth rate had slowed, raising further concerns. A doctor suggested that it could be a lingering effect of COVID-19, but the situation remained unresolved. Frustrated after visiting 17 doctors without a final diagnosis, Courtney turned to an unlikely source: ChatGPT. She shared Alex's symptoms with the AI tool, hoping for some solution. To her surprise, ChatGPT suggested a rare neurological condition known as tethered cord syndrome.

Armed with this newfound insight, Courtney joined a Facebook group of parents whose children also struggled with this condition. She meticulously examined Alex's MRI notes, cross-referencing them with ChatGPT's guidance. One particular detail caught her attention – Alex's discomfort when sitting cross-legged. She believed this indicated a structural issue.

Courtney immediately arranged an appointment with a neurosurgeon, conveying her suspicion of tethered cord syndrome. The neurosurgeon reviewed the MRI and confirmed Alex's diagnosis, marking a turning point in their medical journey. This remarkable instance isn't the first time ChatGPT has aided in diagnosing medical conditions.

Over one lakh Indian children in the United States are at risk of being separated from their parents due to a backlog in the process of granting Green Cards.

More than 10.7 lakh Indians are in queue for employment-based Green Cards, which offer legal permanent residency in the United States.

Considering the huge pendency of cases and the 7 per cent cap on each country, the process is likely to take more than 135 years to be completed at the current numbers.
By the time the Green Card applications get processed, as many as 1.34 lakh Indian children, who are under the H-4 visa, will age out, a recent study by David J Bier, an immigration studies expert at the Cato Institute, stated. This will lead to forced separation from their parents.

Indian-origin Singapore economist Tharman Shanmugaratnam has won the Presidential election in the country. Tharman Shanmugaratnam defeated two contenders of Chinese origin in the country's first contested presidential polls since 2011.

Former Singapore deputy prime minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam was elected president Friday, according to official results, in the city-state's first contested vote for the largely ceremonial position in more than a decade.

The Elections Department declared the 66-year-old economist as the winner over two rival candidates after securing 70.4 percent of ballots cast.

"I declare Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam as the candidate duly elected as the president of Singapore," said election returning officer Tan Meng Dui.

"I’m humbled by this vote - it is not just a vote for me, it is a vote for Singapore’s future, a future of optimism and solidarity. That’s what it really is. My campaign was one of optimism and solidarity, and I believe that’s what Singaporeans want," Tharman Shanmugaratnam said.

Tharman Shanmugaratnam added that he will “honour the trust that Singaporeans have placed in me and respect all Singaporeans including those who did not vote for me."

An Indian-American scientist is hoping to become the first woman to skydive from the stratosphere at an altitude of 42.5 km above the Earth, and shatter four records. Swati Varshney is one of the three candidates selected by the Hera Project of Rising United that seeks to empower women in science and technology, the organisation has announced.
If she makes it to the skydive in 2025, Hera Project expects her to break four current records: The free fall record by 1.1 km from the highest altitude, endure the longest free fall time, break the sound barrier unaided by 264 kph, and the highest crewed balloon flight by over 1 km.
“At Rising United, we’re embarking on a historic journey, shattering records and ceilings to advance women’s equality and inspire young women’s interest in STEAM education,” the organisation said.

US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti on Tuesday highlighted the close collaboration between his country and India in various fields, including technology, trade, environment and space.

He said President Joe Biden told him that India is the most important country in the world to him.

Delivering the keynote address at the Indiaspora G20 forum, Garcetti said that Indian Americans comprise six per cent of taxpayers in the US.

“He (President Biden) told me, when he asked me to come here to serve, he said, this is the most important country in the world to me, I think something that no American president has ever uttered in the history of our two countries.

Indian Americans constitute six per cent of taxpayers in the US," the envoy was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Garcetti's remarks came ahead of Biden's visit to India next month when he will attend the G20 Leaders' Summit in Delhi.

The envoy said the two countries collaborated together in the space sector and stressed that "not even the sky is the limit". He described the US and India as two "powerful forces" in the world.

1.2 crore (or 12 million) This is the huge number of US workers whose jobs are set to witness a significant change due to AI (artificial intelligence) in the coming years.

This is as per a comprehensive new report from consulting giant McKinsey that tries to quantify the changes that AI is bringing to the workplace.

The report examined how the mix of jobs might change over time. Crucially, McKinsey’s research reaches a point of view that has been uncommon so far—that artificial intelligence will not wipe out jobs in the long term. Even though the research in question “cannot definitively rule out job losses, at least in the short term.”
And instead, A.I. will either change the way certain jobs are done or create an opportunity for employees in lower-paying jobs to move into higher-paying positions, provided they receive adequate training. McKinsey’s report estimates 12 million people will switch careers by 2030, 25% more than it projected just two years ago.
