I was in my car this morning and listening to this podcast, which is a very timely message. People are constantly looking for the ‘secret’ to getting in shape or the ‘secret’ to being a Good Christian, and more often than not, the ‘secret’ isn’t nearly as fancy or shocking as you think.
I recently read an interview with a strength coach who was convinced there was some untold industry secret to losing weight and getting in shape. He finally had the opportunity to meet an Olympic weight trainer, and guess what the trainer said: “Want to get in shape? Eat vegetables, eat lean proteins, and work out regularly.” He replied: “That’s it, that’s the secret? That’s no secret at all.” The trainer replied: “Yep, but it’s what you have to do.”
It’s the same for us. Want to be a good Christian? Practice spiritual disciplines regularly: Pray regularly, study your bible regularly, go to church regularly, give regularly, serve regularly, and evangelize regularly. And then, when you’re done doing all those things today… go do ‘em again tomorrow.
Like the sociologist being interviewed on today’s Art of Manliness podcast talks about in this week’s episode, the fortunate (or unfortunate) reality is that the secret formula is this: there is no secret formula. The steps we have to take are in plain sight, we just have to have the tenacity to do them, day in and day out.

Pastor Denny
