Dressing up in costume, walking the neighborhood with friends and family, and participating in annual trick-or-treat festivities is fun for all ages. As enjoyable as this tradition is, it is important to take precautions to ensure your family’s safety. Here are a few tips to help guide the children in your life to ensure a safe Halloween this year:

Trick-or-treat with a parent or friend, and only visit familiar areas and neighborhoods.

Walk on sidewalks, use crosswalks, and stay in well-lit areas.

Carry glow sticks, use flashlights, and add reflective tape or stickers on your costumes and bags to increase your visibility.

Use face paint instead of masks, when possible, to avoid limiting your vision.

Avoid using colored contact lenses unless they have been prescribed by an eye care professional. Commercially sold colored contacts have not been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for safety.

Do not eat any candy until it has been inspected at home and review labels to ensure allergens are not present.

Stay on the porch or stoop when trick-or-treating; children should not go into homes.

Slow down and stay alert; children are twice as likely to be injured in a vehicle or pedestrian accident on Halloween compared to any other day of the year.

On Wednesday night, a Springfield Police Officer was shot while on his way to work. Springfield Police Detectives and a Supervisor transported the officer to Baystate. Thursday morning, the officer was taken to a hospital in Boston.

The officers condition is serious, but non-life threatening.

The officer has been identified as Nestor Santos. He was shot in the face and in his leg.

Nestor, who is a former police officer in Central Massachusetts, has been a Springfield Police Officer for seven years. In 2023, he was a recipient of the Department’s highest honor, the Medal of Valor.

Our prayers are with Nestors family, friends, and sisters and brothers at the Springfield Police Department.

The shooting incidents in Springfield Wednesday night underscores the daily risks faced by our law enforcement officers here in the Commonwealth and across the country.

We are committed to supporting them fully, and we are united in support of our law enforcement officers and our commitment to a safe Massachusetts.

Our officer of the month for June 2024 is Rutland Police Officer Eric Scott. In addition to being a PO in Rutland, officer Scott is a Lieutenant with the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office. Being a police officer is more than how many tickets you write or arrests you make, but also how you build relationships with the community, and officer Scott understands that. Additionally, his work as a lieutenant at the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office and his work as a police officer in Rutland shows a higher level of commitment to keeping the people of Massachusetts safe.
