Welcome back to Terry's Wine Corner!
"Moet is the producer of Dom Perignon, which was named for the Benedictine monk remembered in legend as the "Father of Champagne". Since Dom Perignon is the most famous Champagne in the world, I figured that was the place to propose to Joan. When we arrived at the winery 3 days later, we toured a small section of the 17 miles of caves where thousands of bottles are stored, some dating back to 1856. Following the tour, our group was taken to a lovely and elegant tasting room. The tour guide was tipped off as to what I wanted to do and escorted Joan and me to a private room. As the door closed, I proposed to Joan. Thankfully she said yes when suddenly there was a knock on the door. A young wine steward, dressed in French Revolution fashion, presented us with two glasses on a silver tray filled with a 1998 vintage of Dom Perignon Champagne. We learned later that Napoleon Bonaparte, the first emperor of France, was a close friend of Jean-Rรฉmy Moet, who became famous as the man who introduced champagne to the world."
Thank you for your sparkling info, Terry, and congratulations on your 17th Wedding Anniversary to your Joan!

Stroll Mount Rose features resident Nancy N. this month as she shares with us her active lifestyle!
"Sixteen years ago, I wasnโt even a runner. A friend of mine was training for her first marathon and encouraged me to not only start running but to register for a 10-miler associated with the same event, Kasumigaura โRun for the Blindโ. I was a gym rat, hiker, and walker, but not a runner. After joining her for a few short runs, I accepted the challenge.
...
When I finished my 10-miler, I felt that runners high for the very first time and vowed to run a marathon in the future. I was 51 years old and the youngest of our group of six โGaijinโ (foreign barbarians or โwarriorsโ) that ran that day. Two spouses joined us in support as we started the journey on the earliest train. We were full of energy and excitement. It was such a positive experience running through the countryside with bands playing and people cheering throughout the course! For five of us, it was just a 10-miler. I never forgot the feeling of Finishing! I was on cloud nine all day and my husband had to keep reminding me that I wasnโt the one that ran the marathon. Perhaps because of this, I went on to prepare for four marathons in Japan, though I only ran three. I was a Tokyo International Marathon Finisher in 2011, 2014, and 2016."

Louise Simpson has been a Montreux Member since before it was even MONTREUX!
"As a family focused on health and wellness, we thought this magnificent property would be an ideal location for a Wellness Centre & Gary Player Golf Course.
...
Finallyโฆafter water rights were bought, a golf course was planned, and a Wellness Center, named, โWhispering Pinesโ was designed by San Francisco architect Sim van Der Ryn, we then obtained approval from the local Citizens Advisory Board. Afterward, we presented it to the City Council of Reno, and they accepted our project in 1990.
One Saturday morning, a few months later, I came home to find Sam Jaksick and Rob Nichols looking at our plans on the dining room table. To cut a long story short we partnered up with the Jaksickโs they were the majority shareholders. We all decided to build a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf course which would be surrounded by luxury homes, private and gated. As is often the case with new development projects, The Wellness Centre was replaced with a 34,000 sq foot Clubhouse, a 5,000 sq foot fitness center with an Olympic pool, and 3 tennis courts.
Montreux was named by Stan Jaksick during a trip with Sam & Graham while on a flight visiting alpine/desert golf resorts."

Pyramid Lake and Pelicans!
Resident Emma W. shares her Nature Notes with us in this month's issue of Stroll Mount Rose!
"I recently visited Pyramid Lake to see Anaho Island where American white pelicans breed. Pyramid Lake, about 35 miles northeast of Reno, is the biggest remnant of ancient Lake Lahontan, the huge inland sea that once covered most of Nevada. Pyramid Lake is approximately 15 miles long,11 miles wide and estimated to be about 900 feet at its deepest point. It is fed by the Truckee River, which is mostly the outflow from Lake Tahoe. Pyramid Lake is an endorheic lake, it has no outlet, with water leaving by evaporation or sub-surface seepage.
...
American white pelicans may breed on Anaho Island but can be seen on Renoโs urban lakes and on Washoe Lake as they forage in shallow water often 30 miles or more from their nesting islands. They eat mostly small fish such as minnows, carp, and suckers. On the water they dip their pouched bills to scoop up fish, or tip-up like an oversized dabbling duck. Sometimes, groups of pelicans work together to herd fish into the shallows for easy feeding. Pelicans never carry food in their bill pouches, they use them to scoop up food but swallow their catch before flying off."

Resident Megan G. shares with us her recipe for a teriyaki marinade that's sure to be a crowd pleaser!
"Teriyaki marinade is easy to make at home. Traditional Japanese teriyaki is made by simmering soy sauce, mirin, sugar, and ginger, but Hawaiian-style teriyaki includes pineapple juice and sliced green onions. My parents lived on Oahu in the late 1960s, and teriyaki chicken and fish were staples at our house. Today, I typically add minced garlic and use the green onions as a garnish because the onions tend to burn on the grill or in the oven. This recipe makes a lot, but about half of the recipe is used to marinate fish, chicken, tempeh, or tofu, then the additional marinade is thickened into a sauce for serving. The unused marinade/sauce will keep for about a week in the refrigerator. If you marinate meat, poultry, or fish, discard the used marinade; if your protein is of the vegan variety, you can save the marinade to use again.
Teriyaki Marinade
Makes a little over 2 cups
Ingredients:
1 cup soy sauce or tamari, reduced sodium
ยฝ cup mirin
ยฝ cup brown sugar, not packed (or sweetener of choice, but the brown sugar caramelizes nicely to form a crust on the protein)
ยผ cup pineapple juice
2โ knob of ginger, peeled and grated (about 2 tablespoons, but no need to be shy with the ginger)
1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil (optional)
4-6 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds
*Note that marinades only penetrate 1/8โ deep into the protein, so while this may use ยฝ c. of sugar, not much of that is consumed unless you make it into a sauce.
Directions:
Whisk all the ingredients together. Use up to ยฝ recipe to marinade protein, reserve the other half to drizzle on bowls. To thicken the marinade for drizzling, simmer it over medium-low heat until it reduces to your preferred thickness or add a slurry to the simmering marinade. For the slurry, whisk together 1 tsp. arrowroot powder and 2 tbsp marinade, then whisk the slur

"Antarctica is a fascinating place to visit. Of the nearly eight billion people in the world, less than 80,000 tourists, scientists, and related logistics staff members visit Antarctica each year. The World Navigator is the finest, most extraordinary ship weโve ever used on a cruise/expedition. The smaller the ship in Antarctica, the more individual passengers will get from an extraordinary expedition experience. Every piece of art tells a story, and Martha C.'s quilt that she created from her time living in Luanda is no different.
"Martha and I lived overseas in six countries for almost 20 years, and while I was quickly and completely occupied with the demands of my various foreign work assignments during this period, Martha and the other expatriate wives had to find ways to keep themselves busy, productive, and fulfilled. This necessary human goal was easier to achieve in some countries than others.
For Martha, quilting was one of her creative outlets and her prized Bernina sewing machine always traveled with us. Shopping locally for fabrics and other materials for her quilting projects, and exploring local markets to get inspiration, were always personally satisfying pursuits. Until we were assigned to Luanda, Angola.
We lived in Luanda from 2005-2008, where the overwhelming poverty, the poor state of public health, and dicey personal security conditions were less-than-ideal for both locals and foreign workers. Company personnel security protocols severely limited the opportunities for ex-pats to venture out into local marketplaces to mingle with the locals and shop for interesting goods.
...
So, you take a few months of, literally, โmarket researchโ and several months of patient, painstaking dedication to actualizing Marthaโs vision for an Angolan Experience quilt, and there you have it. Itโs my personal favorite of all of the many quilts sheโs made!"

The team at Anderson, Dorn, & Rader never fails in providing useful and helpful information! This month's Financial Fitness includes tips for new homeowners:
"3 Tips For Every New Homeowner
Congratulations on the purchase of your new home. Whether this is your first home or an upgrade/downsize, the purchasing of a home is a big event in your life. When these major life changes occur, it is important that you are properly prepared. Below are a few things for you to consider now that you finally have the keys to your new home!
1. Update Your Address
Now that you are in your new home, it is very important that you update your address with the appropriate entities. Your local United States Postal Office will have a form you can fill out. If you cannot make it to the post office, you can also update this information on their website. This will assist them in forwarding your mail to you.
2. Make Sure Your House Title Coordinates With Your Estate Plan
While it is still fresh in your mind, reference your new deed to see how the property is titled. Then, you will want to reference your estate planning documents to make sure that your property has been titled properly to achieve your estate planning goals.
For example, if your previous plan had a specific provision distributing your old property, you will want to make sure that you update this provision since you no longer own the previous property. On the other hand, if this is your first home and your estate plan includes a trust to avoid probate, you will need to make sure that your home was titled in the name of the trust and not in your name individually."

We always love all of the great Vino Info that Terry provides in Terry's Wine Corner each month!
"When Your Wine is Going Bad
On a few occasions, you might have experienced the color of your red wine being browner than you would expect. Generally, the problem might be that the wine was exposed to too much air and perhaps the bottle has been open for a few days.
When white wine is exposed to air, it takes on a browner color, and with red wine, it loses some of its bright red or purple colors and starts to turn brown.
A wine thatโs gone bad from being left open smells abrasive and sharp. It will have sour aromas similar to nail polish remover, vinegar, or paint thinner. These aromas are from chemical reactions from the wine being exposed to heat and oxygen which causes bacteria to grow. A wine thatโs โgone badโ wonโt hurt you if you taste it, but itโs probably not a good idea to drink it.
Over the years I have been to many restaurants and bar lounges and I have seen several open bottles on the bar, but they were re-corked. I always ask, "How long have those bottles been open?" For more than a day, I will generally ask them to open a fresh bottle.
The Oldest Known Wine
According to Ancient-Orgins.net, The oldest wine bottle in the world is on display in the German Pfalz Historical Museum. The bottle dates back almost 1700 years (325 โ 359 AD) and was found near Speyer, Germany in a noble Roman coupleโs tomb in 1867. It was the only one of the sixteen bottles that remained intact as it was sealed with wax, and olive oil was poured into the bottle to preserve the wine. I trust the wine stored in your wine cellar or wine closet is not this old. I regularly check the dates on my oldest bottles to make sure I drink some old classics that I have stored over the years. My philosophy is I would rather drink and savor some fine wine than leave it in my will.
