When you think of ‘racial equity’, a 95 year old white male probably isn’t the first image that pops into your mind. Right? But let me change that… meet Dick Bond.

I was commissioned by The Weld Community Foundation to produce this story.
And… it's a joy to share, because well… I get to share it!
https://weldfound.podbean.com/e/the-great-bridge-builder-dr-dick-bond-s-audio-memoir-season-5-episode-3/

Normally my work is produced behind closed doors, commissioned privately by families to document the stories of a loved one (and never cleared for public consumption).

But this piece was commissioned by the foundation and publicly aired on the Weld found Podcast. Check it out it’s a great listen.

———————————————————

Sadly Dick passed away just days after this piece was completed.
It was a sad day when I heard the news. But also an important and timely reminder.

Sit down with your parents and grandparents, get their stories, and learn more about their lives.
You never know when you’ll hear their voice for the last time.

In honor of back to school week... I finally found it! The map of my grandparents childhood hometown! 😝

But honestly kudos to folks who describe their childhood as "walking to school up hill both ways." It may be the only way to actually communicate how different the world was to a younger generation!

Today I’m tending to my family archives. Digitizing some old cassette tapes. Truth be told I spend so much time helping others record their life stories, I don’t spend near as much time engaging with my own elders and archives as I’d like. This is why we gotta record the stories of our parents and grandparents y’all! We’re busy people. It’s hard to slow down and listen to our families and explore our past gosh dern it!

So if you’re in the same boat, and keep saying to your self… someone should really record grandma/grandpa/mom/dad’s stories. I’d love to help you out. #

If you're near Boulder Colorado come pay me a visit at the Aging at Altitude Expo this Saturday! I'd love to meet face to face and learn more about your personal and family history! I love a good story and I love any opportunity to meet my online companions and colleagues in real life! Let's tell your story!

Can you imagine! Riding to school on a bus with no brakes!? 😮

When I tell people about the work I do recording oral histories and audio memoirs, I often get the question,
“Why only record life stories in audio Daniel?! You really need to add video!”

Well let me tell you, when done right... audio immerses you in a story in a way that no other medium can!

Video… yes, yes… it can show you a persons face. But when the retelling of a story is paired with expert audio engineering and sound design, the result is a memory that gets truly brought back to life!

As a producer for radio shows like “This American Life” and “Planet Money”, David Kestenbaum knows a thing or two about the art of storytelling! And I agree with him here!

When someone retells a story… you don’t just get the mere details and data of what happened… but embedded in their retelling is the added color of their perspective! They may be telling you about an event… but whether intended or unintentional they also begin to tell you about themselves and how they see the world.

Ah the family car.... and all the stories that it holds! What was your family car growing up?

Recently I was out and about and saw the *spitting image* of my family car growing up! A mid 80’s Oldsmobile Delta ’88 - we affectionately referred to ours as “Nelly.”

It was a junker! Ha! and as you can imagine it’s the subject of many many stories!
The most notable being - being a 2 door car - over time those LONG and HEAVY doors… well the hinges would bend because of all that weight - which meant the doors never quite closed all the way. The result… the drivers door would sometimes, without warning, just swiiiing open if you made the mistake of taking a turn too hard. It would often fly right open when making those hard left turns through an intersection, ya know, trying to beat the yellow light! Ha! Good times! Just one of many stories.

What was your family car growing up? What stories do you have?

Celebrating my Irish heritage with a plate of home made Irish nachos yesterday. Home cooked potato chips, corned beef, and all the fixin’s. 😋

This dish has a really fun place in my personal family history… but that’s a story for another time 😉.

All you need to know for now is if you ever order “Irish nachos” from a an Irish pub…. And what they bring you is a plate of corn chips topped with some accoutrements, well you wanna go ahead and high tail it outta there. You’re not in capable hands 😂

Join us tomorrow over on IG live.

Are you STILL saying, “you know…. someone should really sit down with Grandpa and record his stories…. someday.”?

Isn’t it HIGH TIME to act on that impulse? Join us tomorrow over on IG live to get inspired! The stories of your elders are more valuable than you know!

Thanks for the invitation More Mobile Yoga.

The relics of the past are SO important.
These artifacts gift us the experience of the past even if only for a moment.

Holding an oil lamp and remembering the stories my Grandparents would tell of the days before electricity… I don’t just “understand” the past better - I FEEL the past. I commune with the experience of it. How different things were! How much things have changed! How life was indeed simpler, but at the same time far more challenging.

And what’s even more magical than these objects by themselves is when they are held in the hands of your elders. An artifact pulls them back into the experience of days long ago, drawing forth stories of times long gone. The stories your loved ones have of the world before your time will blow your mind. But to them often they don’t seem that special, because hey “it was just life at the time.”

So if you’re lucky enough to have aging parents and elders in your midst, talk to them about their stories! You’ll be so amazed about what you’ll find. The things you’ll learn about a world you never knew and the hardships and experiences of an older world you’ll never know.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again… and again… and AGAIN!
-“Sit with your elders and engage with them… before they become your ancestors.”

Happy Monday! Go get a good story!
-Daniel Powell

Something I hear all to often that drives me crazy is "Well my life just hasn't been all that interesting." or "I don't really have MUCH of a story to tell."

"Cut that out right now!"
You DO have a story and it IS interesting!

We make the mistake of seeing the grand actions of others and judging our own stories as uninteresting because "well I've never done THAT."

But every life is filled with difficult decisions, wonderful (and sometimes heartbreaking) stories, and unique circumstances.

At the end of the day anyone's life is just a collection of stories, no matter how rich, powerful, or adventurous they may be.

We humans love story! Give your loved ones the gift of your story, even if you feel your story is simple, that doesn't change the fact that your family would LOVE to hear more of it!

Did you know... that exploring and retelling your own life story can often be a cathartic experience? Amazing article in WSJ on the merits of telling your story and recording memories for your family.

I'm always amazed how through the act of recounting their life story, people gain a new perspective on themself and their experiences. It's truly a gift that's hard to put into words until it's experienced.

In an adaptation from his new book, The Wall Street Journal’s obituary writer reflects on the importance of preserving the stories of your life, both for yourself and your loved ones.

Yes! Have you ever seen a sign like this? Spotted this one at a library. "Yes!" I said to myself, This is how we should treat our Elders! With the same honor and dignity as expectant mothers . Far to often the older members in our society just receive our contempt and frustration for the diminishing of abilities, slower pace, and other side effects that come along with old age. What do you say we ?

What can I say! I love recording voices and having intergenerational conversations! Best interview yet! 😉 ❤️

😮 🤩 Sage words from my good friend Karen Ray over at Remembering the Time! Share stories this Christmas! This is truly the best gift you can give your loved ones... the gift of a window into your life! 😁🎄🎅

Memoir and family history writers – you've been working hard on your project but aren't ready to publish your book yet. What to do? Here are a few wonderful gift ideas so you can still share your work with your family this year:

*Complete one chapter, edit it to make sure you've added sensory details, and add a photo or two to create a mini-memoir or family history. Print it out on nice paper and send it to those you love.

*Transcribe one oral history interview or storytelling session. Burn a cd of the oral recording and include the transcribed story. Again, add at least one and maybe a handful of pictures to the cd, package, and top with a bow.

*Create a family cookbook complete with stories of the recipes or family gatherings, and add a few old photos. Can be as simple as a word doc printed on beautiful paper, or as lovely as a photobook you create online.

*Write a Life Legacy Letter to your family sharing the things most important to you and your hopes and dreams for their future.

Let us know how you've enjoyed sharing your work with your family and/or friends. If you love these gift ideas but need help, you can present your family with a beautiful gift certificate for Remembering the Time services and we can work on your project later. It's fun and a wonderful experience. Contact me today to request your gift certificates in time for the holidays, they make great group gifts!

Can you imagine... cutting down a tree with a handsaw? Let alone it being your day-in / day-out profession? Oh and did I mention this is taking place at 9,000 ft. elevation. Well I *CAN* cut a 2x4 with a hand saw... but even that tiny timber... I'd just rather not have to! I'd much prefer an electric circular saw to get the job done! But back in the day - no such option. They were truly a different breed!

I found this picture on a plaque in North Park Colorado. A real rocky-mountain mountain-man going at it with hand saw... And I was led to believe this was a 2 man operation! 😮.

I'm thankful for those whose shoulders on which I stand and for the hard work they've generationally endured to better their situation and that of the future generations.

Who else has inherited some heirloom corning ware?? 😀
What were the family favorite recipes cooked in those dishes?

In my dishes, Grandmother cooked her delicious "Cabbage Casserole" 😋 (ethnic recipe from our German heritage), and I also have fond memories of her "Baked Chop Suey" (ethnic recipe... by name ONLY 😂 ).

What recipes were cooked in your heirloom corning ware?

This is where it all started 3 years ago! And it's been a joy ever since - helping individuals share their life experiences with their loved ones in the cinema of sound!

The process, as well as my equipment and work space have all become a bit more sophisticated over the past years, (but truth be told... I still use a TON of paper when organizing a story!). But the heart of the work is still the same: hours of interviews and personal experiences woven together into a heartwarming Audio Memoir. Or as well call them around here... a "Liminal Legacy."

The last 3 years have been an absolute joy and I can't wait to help countless more of our elders share their stories with their families!

The fun part of moving... upgrading the studio🎙! And the not so fun part of moving... also upgrading the studio 🔨 🔧🧰.... 😂

I've put a lot of love into treating the new studio space with the best materials out there. But yup it's involved -a lot of blood, sweat & TEARS.

Pictured: I built a ton of killer new acoustic panels for the space and had some great (and very cute) help! The space sounds GREAT and I'm looking forward to giving you the offical tour very soon! Stay tuned. Here's to the many hours of Audio Memoirs that are about to come out of these new doors! 🥂 🎉 🎧

It's always sad to loose a family heirloom no matter how small or silly it may be. Recently while moving from Michigan back home to Colorado, I broke one of my Grandmothers old s***f glasses. Not a huge loss by any means, but it's always sad to loose something that connects you to your family's past. And dang, I'll tell ya! Only dropped from 1 ft high... these things shatter easily!

Are there any family heirlooms that you regret breaking or loosing?
