I've been meaning to make this post for awhile.

In December of 2021, I decided to try my hand at consulting in the digital marketing space. I saw a need I believed I could fill so I did. To tell the truth, I was overwhelmed by the support I received from the community as a whole. My first post reached over 10,000 people organically and I was able to build a client base that sustained me for a little over 8 months. At that time, things changed a bit.

Personally, I went into a major depression and to tell the truth, I just really didn't have a passion for digital marketing at the time. Plus, As my clients I had worked with long term got into a position where they didn't need my services anymore I didn't replace them. Instead, I went all in on school, dove into the insurance industry, and made a final push to see if I could take racing a dirt bike to a higher level than I had. None of those things would have been possible without the money and experience I gained through Route18Digital. Unfortunately at that time, I stepped away from what I had been doing with Route18Digital. I didn't announce I was done with the business at that time because I wasn't sure if I was or not. I told myself last October I'd make that decision within the year. Well…it's been a year so I guess this is that announcement.

I want to take a moment to say thanks to anyone who shared my posts, told their friends about what I did, or offered me advice as I tried my hand at being an entrepreneur. I'm proud of the success I had with some of my clients'metrics, many of whom I still follow closely. Honestly, I didn't realize how stressful it would be to do something like this, but I learned a ton. It all meant a lot and I plan on carrying what I learned into my future endeavors. For now, I'm a full time college student, part time insurance guy, and loving every minute of it. I plan on doing something in brand management when I graduate.

Recently I received an Email from Robin (AKA Simply Fitness KC) with some data from her website! It's always great seeing numbers that indicate marketing efforts are being realized. Over half of her site visitors were new, they spent more time on the site, and a large portion was from social media efforts recently!

Should you be running paid ads on social media? *warning: long post!*
$150 dollars, 3 ad types, and no new clients later: probably not. Here's the pros and cons though, as with anything it is up to you to decide what is best for your small business. This is just my personal experience.
PROS:
1. You will reach more people
2. Ad credits are offered occasionally.
3. The array of targeting options is impressive.
CONS:
1. The costs quietly add up quickly.
2. Even well targeted ads may not convert well.
3. Paid reach is down year over year so ads aren't as effective as they once were.
Ultimately, I have found that organic traffic and word of mouth go much further than a paid ad. However, if your goal is to get fresh new eyes on your content and you have the budget: go for it (Especially when ad credits are offered)! I took advantage of ad credits to get $60 in ads for $30.
With a well defined organic content strategy, clients that believe in what you do, and good content: I believe you will see a better ROI as a small business than you will see boosting posts. However, they DO have their place, so don't completely write off promoting your business through paid ads or boosting posts. Just be aware of how the costs quietly add up and evaluate regularly if you are getting worthwhile results!

"Where should I be posting?" The simple answer is: "It depends."
To run a successful social media campaign you need to post wherever you believe people who will use your product or service spend their time. For some businesses this could be Tiktok and Instagram, others it could be LinkedIn. In truth, the answer isn't black and white like this graphic, it is different for every business. The best things you can do to optimize posting time is to look at your audience insights, be aware of suggested post times when scheduling posts, and study what times of the day seem to draw the most impressions from your audience.

The power of Community:

Tuesday, I launched a Digital Marketing company with an emphasis on social media marketing, today is Friday. In four days in business, my announcement post reached over 7,000 people and counting. Why? Community. I had literally 0 followers when I made my post, yet a couple of shares, some kind words, and a few DM’s later, I have over 60 people supporting what I am doing. This is how powerful a community can be when they support people or ideas they believe in.

I’m not doing this get rich; I am doing this because I saw a need that I legitimately believed I could fill. The local construction contractor, restaurant owner, or independently owned grocery store is in the same boat. Sure, there is the intention of making a profit, but there is also the intention of building a better community and impacting the world in a positive way. Your like, share, or positive words regarding a business page mean the world to their owners because they could be the thing that leads to a client, partnership, or customers that allows them to continue forward financially.

I am so appreciative to be associated with such uplifting and positive communities such as my hometown and surrounding areas. It’s easy to get caught up in the negative of the world, but we all should recognize and celebrate the good that comes from community support. Whether digital or physical, community builds brands, relationships, and followings that are meaningful. Take pride in being part of a community, support local businesses when it is reasonable to do so, and share causes you believe in (business or otherwise).
