Thank you to all the bands, artists, producers, engineers, and everyone else who made this year so amazing! Yes 2020 was a complete s**t show with plenty of low points. But in spite of all that, I was fortunate enough to work on 91 songs, between 30 projects, for 19 different artists this year.
I made new friends, worked in studios I used to dream about, and learned more in one year than I ever thought was possible.
So thank you to everyone who made this year so great🥂Happy New Year’s! I can’t wait to start working on even more music with you next year.
Unpopular opinion: you only need one mic to record guitar
If you’re new to recording, or recording at home, it’s easy to fall into the trap of endless YouTube videos and blog posts about all the different ways the pros get guitar sounds. Things like 3 to 4 mics on an amp, room mics, or even micing the back of your speaker.
Yes, these things have a time and a place, but if you’re already struggling with your guitar sound I can guarantee these things will not help. If anything, you’re just causing phase issues and making things worse.
When I go to record guitar, I use one cheap dynamic mic aimed where the cone and the dust cap meet. If that’s not working, I adjust the tone... That’s it! Very rarely, and I mean VERY RARELY, do I reach for another mic.
The moral of the story is this: if you’re struggling with guitar sounds, work on your playing and tone (not your mic collection).
