UPDATED: Facebook changes parent company name to ‘Meta’

Facebook employees gather in front of a sign displaying a new logo and the name 'Meta' in front of Facebook headquarters.

Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg on Thursday announced the parent company’s name is being changed to “Meta” to represent a future beyond just its troubled social network.

The new handle comes as the social media giant tries to fend off one its worst crises yet and pivot to its ambitions for the “metaverse” virtual reality version of the internet that the tech giant sees as the future.

Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp will keep their names under the rebranding.

“We’ve learned a lot from struggling with social issues and living under closed platforms, and now it is time to take everything that we’ve learned and help build the next chapter,” Zuckerberg said during an annual developers conference.

“I am proud to announce that starting today, our company is now Meta. Our mission remains the same, still about bringing people together, our apps and their brands, they’re not changing,” he added.

Facebook critics pounced last week on a report that leaked the rebranding plans, arguing the company was aiming to distract from recent scandals and controversy.

An activist group calling itself The Real Facebook Oversight Board has warned that major industries like oil and to***co had rebranded to “deflect attention” from their problems.

“Facebook thinks that a rebrand can help them change the subject,” the group said last week, adding the “real issue” was the need for oversight and regulation.

DPR seals 86 illegal gas plants in Lagos

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) has said it shutdown 86 Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) plants in Lagos State in 2020 for operating illegally.

Mr Paul Osu, Head, Public Affairs, DPR made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday in Lagos, NAN reports.

Osu said the LPG (cooking gas) plants were shutdown for non-compliance with international safety standards.

According to him, the plants were also operating without approval or licence from the regulatory agency.

“Some of the sealed plants were operating under high tension electrical installations and other unapproved locations.

“Also, the move was aimed at reducing the occurrence of gas explosion and fire incidents in the State.

“Moreso, we would like to notify the public that DPR would continue to clamp down on such illegal plants,” he said.

He advised that people should learn the need for safe usage and distribution of gas.

Pay the $4.2m Ibori loot to Delta students – Sowore

Former Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has asked students in Delta State to demand for the £4.2m looted assets by a former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori.

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing on Tuesday expressed the country’s readiness to return looted assets worth £4.2 million to Nigeria recovered from Ibori’s friends and family members.

Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, signing for Nigeria, revealed that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the returned loots be deployed for the completion of the second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan expressway and the Abuja to Kano expressway.

However, Sowore in a post on his Twitter page said the repatriated funds by Ibori should be spent on schools in the state and not on federal government projects.

The tweet reads: “The recovered loot should be used to pay students of higher institutions in Delta . They must demand that the £4.2m Ibori loot being repatriated from the UK must be spent on schools in the state instead of accepting to pay exorbitant school fees like the N150k being charged at Delta State University. It is your money.”

Rivers deserves better than narrow gauge rail line – Wike insists

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, has insisted that the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri Narrow gauge rail line is not good enough for Rivers State and the connecting states.

Governor Wike said this while commissioning the Omuechi-Omokiri-Aluu Road in Ikwerre Local Government area of the state.

He said the plan by the Federal government to complete the project in thirty-six months is unrealistic.

According to Wike, “I heard some people came to Rivers State to flag-off narrow gauge when people are talking about standard gauge. And they are making noise about it.

“Imagine Rivers State, the Treasure Base of the Nation. The state that they used the money to produce their president and towards the end of their administration they are telling us to have a narrow gauge.

“I was watching Kakaaki and saw somebody saying he’s a minister and he said he does not drink. You want to finish the narrow gauge in 36 months. That is after they have left office.”

Former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Austin Opara who commissioned the project said Governor Wike has been resourceful with State funds

Buhari govt rules out direct refund of Ibori loot to Delta

President Muhammadu Buhari-led government has tactically ruled out a direct refund of the Ibori loot Delta State Government.

An indication came to the fore in the remarks by Abubakar Malami, Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding with the United Kingdom.

“In consonance with existing framework or model engaged in the management of previous recoveries, the Federal Executive Council directed that the instant repatriated funds should be deployed towards the completion of the following legacy projects: the Second Niger Bridge, Abuja – Kano expressway and the Lagos – Ibadan expressway”, he said.

Malami said the spending is under the coordination of the Nigeria Social Investment Authority (NSIA) to ensure integrity of the process, while a reputable Civil Society Organization has been engaged to monitor the ex*****on of the projects.

In the MoU earlier executed in 2016, the UK agreed to release millions of pounds declared stolen by former Delta State Governor, James Ibori and associates.

Malami said the development was the threshold of another major milestone in Nigeria’s quest to attain full recovery of all looted assets, prevent abuse of recovered assets and ensure optimal utilization for citizens’ benefit.

The minister noted that the repatriation underscored the fact that international cooperation and mutual trust can yield great benefits for the citizenry in developing countries who are the direct victims of acts of corruption.

Malamai recalled Nigeria provided the assistance to the British authorities while the prosecution of James Ibori lasted in London.

The AGF expressed confidence that the Nigerian and British governments remain committed to all affirmative actions to combat corruption/illicit financial flows and ensure looters do not find comfort.

Reno Omokri reacts to the Yoruba nation protest

It had reported that amid heavy security at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, Lagos, wherein the protest was scheduled to begin, the Yoruba nation protesters defiled the operatives, storming the region for the mega rally as in advance deliberate.

Reacting, Reno in a put up on his official page, said he was inspired with the rally that's holding no matter intimidation from the security agencies.

The put up reads, “imagine a central authority that announces that bandits and killer herdsmen can be tolerated even though they kill Nigerians, so long as they believe in one Nigeria, but Sunday Igboho cannot be tolerated due to the fact he does not trust in Nigeria even though he doesn’t kill Nigerians.

Indeed, i am inspired that Igboho’s rally was nevertheless held, no matter desperate attempts with the aid of the Buhari junta to prevent it. Sunday Igboho is a hero. He has achieved no wrong with the aid of protecting his people from killer herdsmen because Article 51 of the United nations constitution gives him that right.

He and his supporters actually have a right of freedom of association, and i commend them for making use of that right in the face of apparent attempts to intimidate them”.
