Don't let September creep up before you have an action plan for how you are going to incorporate Social Media into your schedule this year. Trust us.

Marketing is a part of any good business plan (this includes social media!), and, your artistic career is a BUSINESS. Start treating it like one!

Some tips on what to do this August:
* Choose a calendar or a spreadsheet layout that works for you (This can be as simple as your gmail calendar!)
* Sit down and map out major events/happenings in the upcoming season with dates!
* Make a plan for what you want to post for those major events (aka a STRATEGY!)
* Create a content plan for posting when you don't have any events to promote
* SCHEDULE these post ideas into a calendar/spreadsheet with multiple reminders ahead of time

We know this may seem foreign to you, but trust us when we say, YOU ARE CAPABLE OF DOING THIS.

We promise that carving out the time to sit down and tackle this will not take long. You have to trust the process and value yourself enough to make a plan and use your time strategically.

"Hi everyone", swipe to next video... "Hi y’all!", swipe to next video ... "Hey guys!", swipe to next video ... "Hello everyone!"....

⚠️DISCLAIMER⚠️ This is not to make anyone feel judged or shamed. It's a wake-up call to remind you about a few IMPORTANT things 👇🏼

1️⃣ People spend on average ❗️5-8 seconds❗️watching videos/reels, so you have a very short amount of time to get your message across. Don't waste that time greeting "everyone".

2️⃣ Users like to scroll through your reels! If they all start in the same way, they will get bored and leave, most likely never to return 😱 Don't push people away who could potentially truly benefit from what you have to offer, by simply not going straight to the point.

P.S. Please do not beat yourself up if you are one of those who have always started your videos this way. We are mere humans, and it is a lot to keep up with all the trends and the ever-changing dynamics here.

❓Where do you get to communicate directly with your consumer without being in the same room as them?

❓Where can you learn about their likes and dislikes without a multi-step survey process?

❓Where can an audience member ask a question quickly before an event, and know that it will be seen by a member of your team who has the correct information?

If you have an answer that isn’t “via social media,” we would love to know your secret! We don’t know where else you can accomplish all of these things in one space besides social media platforms.

That’s why…

✅ Your social media manager needs to be an INTEGRAL part of your marketing team, even if you outsource that work to a firm!

The visuals of your brand communicate messaging about you and your organization subliminally. Making visual decisions like these may seem easy and fun (It should be!), but they are just as important as the actual product / service / artistry you provide.

TOP QUESTIONS to answer when building a social media strategy 👇🏼

💥 What is your goal?

Are you trying to grow your following? Sell tickets to a performance? Connect with other members of your community? There is no wrong answer this question, but, if you don’t have a goal, then you won’t be able to build a plan to achieve it!

💥 What content do you know you will have or can make?

Be realistic with this!
-Do you know you will have production photos or footage before a performance?
-Will you have time to film reels behind the scenes?
-Are you a performer who has the bandwidth to create content during tech week?
Take YOU into account when answering this question! Don’t make a plan you can’t feel excited about executing.

💥 What do your analytics tell you about your audience’s content preferences?

While we fully support you sharing the most authentic version of your art, the business of art means you need to at least factor in a dash of what your followers love to see. Do your reels take off while your carousels flop? Keep that in mind. Most often it’s about the way content is packaged - not necessarily the content itself - that makes it successful!

💥 What is your timeline for promotion?

If you have time constraints around your strategy - a show opening, a season announcement, a fundraising deadline - Start from the end and work backwards! Know where you have to be, by when and figure out what steps you need to take, information you need to share, and content you can create to fit that timeline.

Strategy is simply ✨A PLAN OF ATTACK✨

👉🏼 You wouldn’t step on stage without thinking about what you need to do to give your best performance.
👉🏼 You wouldn’t plan a season without thinking about what your audience most enjoys.

We get it. You have already put so much effort 💪🏼 time ⏰and money 💸 into your craft. The need to promote your work on top of it all is… overwhelming.

Guess what? It doesn’t have to be!

As ordained ministers of the 🛐 church of social media 🛐 (it’s real - don’t look it up 😂), we officially absolve you of all the pressures surrounding a social media presence. Are you listening?

Let your social media be an extension of your art, of your purpose. This can be fun if you give yourself permission to create what YOU want. Trust us when we say, the content will find its audience.

Here are some DOs & DONTs to kick-off your social media presence - it’s called STRATEGY, BABY 😘

✅ DO think of how you want to present yourself/ your art. This is what we call Branding.

✅ DO create some goals for yourself for you Social Media presence - who are you trying to reach?

🚨PSA🚨 STOP using Social Media to make the Arts more exclusive!!

For decades, people have been excluded in the performing arts for various (unacceptable) reasons.

NOW artists are getting excluded for archaic social media “justifications” such as low follower count, which makes us want to laugh hysterically… and also cry.

Here’s an important FACT about social media that needs to be shouted from the rooftops:

💥Low follower count does not mean low impact💥

Times have changed!
The way these platforms function has changed!
Audience wants and needs have changed!

👉🏼 A social media account can still have reach, engagement, and impact without having 50k followers. Understand that users are no longer engaging and following accounts like they did 4 years ago - or even ONE year ago!

If you are going to use social media as a marketing tool, you MUST keep up with these constant changes.
