Located at 131 S Main st. The Strand Theatre opened on September 2, 1915. Advertised as the largest theatre in the state and one of the largest in the country at the time. It was opened by Maurice Winter- The movie king of Akron

In 1954 Goodyear aerospace developed the Goodyear Gizmo. A one seat helicopter. The Gizmo was an observation helicopter that the US Navy took some interest in, but eventually decided to pass on the concept. 3 different versions of the Gizmo were developed, but by the late 50s the Gizmo was grounded

Maybe you know 161 S high st as the Ocasek building. Years ago that was the location of the Akron Armory. On October 14, 1958, the 2500 seat building was rocking all night. Buddy Holly and the crickets headlined a truly all star cast. The armory was home of wrestling, boxing, magic shows, fashion shows and of obviously some great concerts throughout the years.This was Holly's third trip of the year to the rubber city. Sadly it was also his last as he would pass away just 3 and a half months later in that tragic plane crash (the day the music died) that also killed Richie Valens and J.P. Richardson(the big bopper). *- one more side note- every one knows about the coin toss that got Valens on the plane but some may not know that Waylon Jennings actually gave up his seat to Richardson who was sick with the flu at the time.

Our hearts break to learn of the death of Nick Gilbert, the son of Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan. He was 26 years old.

Justice took 53 years, but justice finally arrived. 78 yr old Gus Sapharas was found guilty of 2 counts of murder. Sapharas killed Akron teenager Karen Bentz in 1970. 5 years later he killed Loretta Davis. Sapharas manages to escape detection for almost 50 years. He was arrested in 2019 due to some amazing advances in DNA technology. On Wednesday, He was sentenced to life in prison.
