Matilda Arabella Evans is an important figure in South Carolina Black History. She was a trailblazer in the medical field in the late 1800s. According to the National Institute of Health she was the first African-American woman licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina.
After graduation from the Woman’s Medical College of Pennsylvania in 1897, she returned to her home state to work out of her home. During her stay in Columbia, she also analyzed black school children’s health and founded an examination program within the S.C. public school system.
She practiced gynecology, obstetrics and surgery there until 1901 when she established the Taylor Lane Hospital, the first black hospital in Columbia. She brought her passion for medicine to education and journalism. She published a weekly newspaper — The Negro Health Journal of South Carolina — according to Historic Columbia.

Freddie Stowers of Sandy Springs, SC (Anderson County) distinguished himself by exceptional heroism on 28 September 1918 while serving as a squad leader in Company C, 371st Infantry Regiment, 93d Infantry Division. His company was the lead company during the attack on Hill 188, Champagne Marne Sector, France, during World War I. Shortly after his death, Stowers was recommended for the Medal of Honor; however, this recommendation was never processed. Over 70 years later, he posthumously received the Medal of Honor and Purple Heart for his actions. Stowers Elementary School on Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Corporal Freddie Stowers Single Soldier Billeting Complex Stowers Elementary School on Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Corporal Freddie Stowers Single Soldier Billeting Complex on Fort Jackson, South Carolina, are both named in his honor.

My name is Nykedra Henry I am a proud participant of the Emerald of Excellence Debutante Cotillion being held by the Upsilon Omega Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. In this program, the other debutantes and I have learned and developed a deeper understanding of the meaning of service and sisterhood and the power they have together. Emerald of Excellence Debutante Cotillion is also a scholarship program. The more donations I receive, the more money I will earn in the form of a scholarship. This scholarship will help me as I go on to pursue a degree in Psychology upon graduation.
