Izzie and I have spent the last 9 days volunteering to repair substandard housing in the Central Appalachian region of Kentucky. I will post many more photos, but this is a quick ask: there was a 10yo boy at one of the sites. These are kids living in abject poverty and making in-person connections can be really challenging. Samson has his own YouTube channel and when our group got him from a handful of followers to 50, he was over the moon. In this economically devastated region, it’s the little things. In just a few weeks, my 15-year-old daughter Izzie and I are heading to Kentucky to volunteer with the Appalachia Service Project through St. John’s Church. The area has been hard hit with job loss, the opioid crisis, substandard housing supply, and food insecurity. Large swaths of people are living in abject poverty.

We will spend nine days building and repairing homes to make them warmer, safer, and drier for families in need. We have spent these past months learning about the Appalachian people, gaining construction skills, and bonding with a wonderful group of teens and adults from across Boston's South Shore.

ASP volunteers build 20 new houses every year and repair another 3,000, impacting more than 350 families annually in 25 communities. I am proud to count Izzie and myself as part of the 15,000 volunteers that serve the Appalachian people every year.
