Honoring Irving Linwood Peddrew III, the first African American student to attend Virginia Tech. Peddrew was as an electrical engineering major and member of the Corps of Cadets in 1953. Peddrew studied three years at Virginia Tech before moving to California to work and did not complete his degree program. In 2016, Peddrew was presented with an honorary Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering at VT.
His legacy is reflected in the numerous programs, initiatives, and opportunities he helped establish, which will continue to benefit generations to come.
I extend my deepest condolences to Mr. Peddrew’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his spirit. Irving Peddrew's memory will forever remain a source of inspiration, and his impact will be felt throughout Virginia Tech and beyond.
Rest in peace, Mr. Peddrew. Your legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of all who were fortunate enough to know you.
