STATEMENT OF ELS WOODKE REGARDING JEFFERY WOODKE’S RELEASE
7:00am PST March 20, 2023

Els Woodke confirmed this morning that she has been informed by the US government that her husband Jeffery Woodke is free after 6 ½ years of captivity in West Africa. Jeff, a missionary who has been conducting humanitarian aid work in Niger for more than 30 years, was kidnapped from his residence in Abalak, Niger on October 14, 2016. The US and Nigeran governments have long suspected that jihadists have held Jeff in the Sahel since then.

Els has not yet heard from Jeff but she has been told he is in good condition. She has expressed her profound thanks to the many people in governments and others around the world who have worked so hard to see this result. She praises God for answering the prayers of Christians everywhere who have prayed for this outcome.

Els will release more information later today as it becomes available to her.

The Bring Our Families Home Campaign, a campaign led by family members of Americans wrongfully detained or held hostage abroad, will be hosting a ‘Welcome Home” press event at their Washington D.C. mural to mark the homecoming of our American hostages and wrongful detainees. Isaac Campbell, the artist behind the large-scale wheat paste mural in Georgetown, will be returning to D.C. to redesign the mural now that 5 of the 18 wrongful detainees featured on the mural have been released. He will also add to the mural the image of Eyvin Hernandez, an American who remains wrongfully detained in Venezuela.

On October 1st, President Biden announced the release of seven Americans from Venezuela, five of whom -Matthew Heath, Jose Pereira, Alirio Zambrano, Jose Luis Zambrano, and Jorge Toledo - were part of the Bring Our Families Home Campaign. That same day, it was also announced that the travel ban of Baquer Namazi, who had been wrongfully detained in Iran since 2016 and who is also part of our Campaign, was lifted and that he was finally able to leave Iran. We applaud the President for his courage to use the necessary tools to free these innocent Americans. We call upon him to continue to take such actions to bring home all Americans wrongfully detained around the world.

The Bring Our Families Home Campaign is a family-led campaign advocating for Americans currently held hostage and wrongfully detained abroad, as publicly identified by the James W. Foley Legacy Foundation. The Campaign includes the parents, children, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and friends of Americans whose only crime is being American and who are now being used as political pawns. The Campaign’s goal is to encourage the Biden Administration and our national political leaders to support the use of every tool available – including trades – to secure the prompt return of Americans held abroad.
