While my veggies didn't fair so well (it takes REAL talent to take second place in not one but TWO classes where you are the only entrant), I did MUCH better in canning. Every item but one placed and 2 won best in show!!!
Making more fair memories as a family. Last year .wellsjr didn't get to help us get to the fair. This year, he did. Because it's been so rainy, the birds feet are all muddy. So, Benny got a pedicure. The others will get a pedicure at the fair tomorrow. Need to check in veggies and 2 Rhode Island Red hens tomorrow and then it is fair time!!!!
I've made the big time. 😂😂😂 Come see me on Friday at the Washington County Fair as I do canning demonstrations at 11AM and 3PM. We will be giving away 2 steam canners courtesy of Lehman's Must be present to win!!!

Made a batch of Nana's tongue pickles (sweet ripe cucumber pickles). Such happy memories of eating these as a kid. Also made a batch of bread and butter pickles as well
On Monday the begins. And so tomorrow I'll be dropping off my canning entries. Then on Monday it's veggies and chickens. Gonna be a good week!!!
It's been a few years since I've made cucumber relish. 7 pints in the .
Blueberry pie filling! I think I'm done canning blueberry stuff.....
We be jammin'. All day jammin'. Multiple batches of blueberry. Blueberry lime. Strawberry. Rhubarb. Strawberry rhubarb. And something new to try; Blueberry Bonanza where you make blueberry syrup with the juice and blueberry butter with the pulp. I am whipped!!!
My currant harvest was a bit limited due to birds getting berries while we were on vacation. So, I added some organic, no sugar added cranberry juice and made currant/cranberry jelly.
Spent the afternoon processing the spring batch of meat birds with my dad and my son.
These have got to be the most "chickeny" Cornish X I've raised. Active. Curious. They do more than just sit, eat and p**p. The males are probably ready to.process this weekend but I'm going to push them another week before processing.
6 rows of potatoes planted tonight in the bed.
The garden got a fresh blanket of hay tonight. Ready for me to plant potatoes and squash there tomorrow.
Yesterday I spent time getting the raised beds planted. They are almost fully filled!!!
Things are starting to pop in the raised beds. Got some things transplanted and some more seeds in the ground. Also finished the grids on all of the beds. It's getting there!!!!
It felt so good to get my hands in some dirt while getting some plants and seeds into the raised beds!!! Lettuce, arugula, beets, radishes, carrots and peas planted tonight!!!
Got the beds filled and started gridding them. But, still didn't get anything planted..... 😭😭
Fixed. Not 100% perfect. But, acceptable. Now to get the grid layouts in place and the beds topped off and some seeds in the ground!! Let's go!!!
Our baby chicks have arrived!!!
Got the little stinkers out of the brooder and into the mobile coop. Tomorrow I prep the brooder for the standard breeds chicks that should be arriving on Friday!!!
The final raised bed is built. Now, to top off the ones that need it, get trellises up and start getting some plants and seeds in the ground!!!
What a pleasure to spend some time this weekend with .winger at the Southern Adirondack Homesteading Festival at the
One week left to get your tickets!!!
The newest additions to the homestead.
Thanks to all of the help from my supervisors, I was able to get a jump on rehabbing the before the rain set in.
Safety inspector Steak is on the job site. I've gotten a lecture on safe lifting, proper use of power tools, etc. The drills have passed safety inspection as well!!
Tomorrow, the signups for the hands-on workshops become available. And when they're gone, they're gone!!!

Season 4 launches tomorrow!!!! #thehomesteadjourney #thehomesteadjourneypodcast #homestead #homesteading #homesteader #518homesteaders #mediterraneandiet #emptynesters
Getting ready to launch season 4. Part of that includes a new intro. This is what I'm leaning towards. I figured I'd get feedback from the listening audience. Please respond with your vote below: 1. I love it. It's got me hyped for season 4. 2. It's ok. But, you could do better. 3. Intros are for chumps. I'll never listen and skip it anyhow. 4. It sucks. I'd rather listen to Yoko Ono sing the phone book. 5. There was nothing wrong with the old one. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!!! #thehomesteadjourneypodcast #thehomesteadjourney #podcast #homesteadpodcast #homesteading

Sometimes it is tempting to just show the pretty parts of homesteading. It's tempting to gloss over the difficult pieces, the mistakes and the failures. On episode 118 I am joined by @farmishkindoflife as we talk about keeping things real on the homestead and how authenticity can lead to great connections and conversations with people struggling with the same challenges. They say that in Vermont, the only time people lock their car doors is during zucchini season. When you're blessed with an abundant harvest, what can you do with it so as to not make enemies with your neighbors? https://www.thehomesteadjourney.net/podcast/episode/4e47969a/fmf12-what-am-i-gonna-do-with-all-that-zucchini
A few weeks ago, I ran into a friend of mine at church that I hadn't seen in awhile. While we were catching up, he was asking me about some of the things I had been posting on Facebook. And then he asked me this question, "Brian, how do you get it all done??!!" And I was forced to share my dirty little secret......... https://www.thehomesteadjourney.net/podcast/episode/4cda67b9/s1e92-my-dirty-little-secret
