What is a Mental Mixtape?

A is an eclectic collection of episodic Hip Hop Fiction that celebrates the skills of unique, up and coming writers at their best....just like an audio mixtape.

Also, like an audio mixtape, the , entitled will have exclusive 'underground' material in it that cannot be found in mainstreaming compilations, like say...an English Fiction Anthology.

The so-called 'canon' has shut out, and disqualified some of the greatest 'street 'writers in history due to its culturally superior attitude and 'rules', going all the way back to Chester Himes and staying stuffy and imperialistic all the way through Donald Goines up to K'wan Foye.

These stories will be aesthetically accessible to The Hip Hop Generation. The characters, dialogue, and description of environment and atmosphere jump off the page.

Lord Jay grew up watching rap videos as a latch key kid. His mother worked two jobs, hated his father, who was a narcissistic hustler, shunned him and encouraged him very little.

In fact, she emasculated him every chance she got while drunk.

She was barely around, having to work two jobs. Every chance she had to get away from her responsibilities, she took it.

Drinking was her vice of choice, sometimes co***ne.

She tried to hide both, but he would smell the liquor on her and see the powder in her nose.

He stayed with a lot of crazy relatives, who really didn't want him there while she would be off doing her thing.

Kicking it with his other cousins who were going through the same s**t.

Rhonda's forehead was sweating. She sighed, looking at her watch for the sixth time within five minutes.

A high pitch started to ring in her ear, like the strings in a horror flick. It was like a sixth sense she had, and one of the reasons she knew when a job wasn’t right for her. It had never failed her, ever.

It was hard to ignore.

‘Hmmm’

Snake was late.

Snake was NEVER late.

‘Something had to have gone wrong’

She shook the feeling off her back, took a deep breath, wiped the sweat from her forehead with a napkin, then scanned up and down both streets again. Her mind tried to determine which way he would come from, to escape her building anxiety.

Rhonda needed Snake. They had more work to do.

He was a young man on fire. It burned high inside and you could see it in his eyes.Arnold was 18 years old, and knew life where he was living was most times cold, uncaring, and unforgiving.

His so-called friends lived just as poorly and were constantly victims of the savagery their level of poverty infused them with.

They did each other like animals daily.

He was way past sick of the s**t. Sick of being the s**t he wanted to get away from.

At the age of six, without ever having a drawing lesson, much less a writing lesson, or math lesson even, Eula had been able to draw very vivid pictures.

She had no control over the pictures she received in what she once thought was just her imagination.

But it was more than that.

They were pictures of situations she could not stop, or change.

The images never came as an idea, or a thought. And never in pieces. She would be surged with a sudden feeling, very heavy. An uncomfortably murky mix of dread, grief, fear, and anxiousness.

Her eyes would tear up and she would start to pace and mumble, fidgeting with her hands like there were fleas on them, or they were starting to get numb from itchy, dry cold.

A farmer in Northern California decides not to report the landing of three strange soil-filled meteors on his property. After touching one, every cell in his body becomes consumed and reproduced by an ever growing body of intelligent and nearly indestructible parasites of less than microscopic size. Through a chain of the most bizarre characters, and situations, ranging from ‘ghetto’ to ‘bougie’ they make their way to the only woman on earth immune to them.

Unfortunately, she is no angel.

MARQUEESHA is a gorgeous, shapely, bi-racial girl from Manhattan who takes quiet pride in being a s*x addict, an ‘escort’ of sorts, and a v***n. She was born to a mother and father quite unlike her, and supernaturally gifted in the arts of seduction and s*xual pleasure. In her strange and deceptive pursuit of pleasure and security she collects and throws away many wealthy concubines, making one LORD JAY, a “thugged out”, crack dealing clan ringleader from The Bronx, her main squeeze. This ends up being a bad move for her. Being insatiable, beautiful and deceptive she underestimates his intelligence and resourcefulness because of his occupation and place of origin. He is much smarter and much stronger than she thinks, but it matters not.

MARQUEESHA catches” the disease” from a rich white male “associate” of hers named Jacob, a soil scientist, and unconsciously infects LORD JAY. At the time she infects him during their last romp, she is unaware that he is on to her cheating ways and lies and has been for some time. He has even spotted her in department stores kissing and holding hands with some of her ‘tricks’, while in disguise.

She is dismissed, violently with hateful eyes and a gun to her forehead. She leaves in shock.

Here is where the party starts…

LORD JAY is attacked by a series of violent itching episodes immediately after her departure then dies a horrible death in a matter of hours, decomposing alive little by little in his shower.

His best friend and main partner in crime, EASY, finds him in a despicable state and kills him to put him out of his pain and misery, but not before hearing that it was MARQUEESHA that did it to him. After pulling himself together, EASY and a few of his boys hunt her down to avenge his boss. Being from the hood and far removed from what they first laugh off as “bulls**t science fiction”, they slowly and frightfully witness and discover a side of reality beyond their imaginations and social grasp that changes their lives forever..., the ones who make it out of the situation alive that is.

The seductress is still oblivious. Ignorance is bliss.

In Manhattan, MARQUEESHA brushes her shoulders off from the whole situation having already financially planned for such a moment. Being given ‘the boot’, that is. She always has a Plan B…, Plan Z even. H***y and mad, she comes across Jacob, who the parasites have decided to use as a “satellite”, that is, a trickster that can bring them good food. They love healthy flesh and undeveloped brains. The parasites are intrigued by MARQUEESHA because they cannot consume, or transform her flesh. They abandon his body for the versatility of hers.

They begin to suspect that her origins reach beyond earth. This information is kept from her. They calculate a date they will be able to take her flesh, observing how much of her ’life force’ she wastes engaging in all her hedonistic activities

A crack slowly begins to appear for them to crawl through.

After a while they begin to get into her mind and take her on a transforming journey through her own psyche and body. During this journey, which takes her into the bedrooms of some of the most unique men and women she has ever encountered, MARQUEESHA, ironically, discovers a more divine, spiritual side of herself. She begins to transform in an opposite direction of what was expected by the parasites.

Through this process she learns that they can be defeated, not with a vaccine, weapon, or physical force, but by learning to control herself with much labor, change, and “conscious” regeneration… This change tones her down taking her from the yelling city of New York to a quiet “New Age” town in New Mexico where she engages in one last battle with them. The hardest battle she ever has had to fight.

A battle for her soul.

It's 1996 in the Windy City. Summer time.

A few million in counterfeit bills are won by Miguel, a sharp mexican Chicago gangster with a quick fuse, in a spades game in Isla Mujeres while on vacation.

He decides to use it to take some territory from Snake, an old spades partner he ran long cons with in his earlier years.

His plan stirs up fire.

Divine, is a charismatic hustler with abnormally keen perception. He knows what's poppin' in the hood before the hood does, but keeps below the radar. Low key.

His ' feelers' catch a preview of the heat coming.

He forsees in his mind's eye a rush of drama in the streets. Deaths and tricks. He tries to stay out of it, but becomes helplessly attracted to Tomika, a clever, androgynous gangstress. Lost, on the run, and desperate. She has similar abilities.

Rhonda, her lover and a ruthless chick, was collecting a trail of bodies with her clique. It was paying well. Getting them both close to the dream of moving out the city and living good.

Rhonda, works for Snake. When Snake sends her to murder three of his own men to steal 80 grand in counterfeit bills from. Miguel, she is killed by him personally.

This sets off a storm of murder, lies and deception.

Divine loses his best friend to the mess and at the same time, discovers a portion of the bills are in his possession.

He has to get out of the city.

Tomika and Divine decide to unite forces to outsmart their pursuers and leave to realize their dreams.

At the same time...

A journey through 52 Cards and the energies and personalities they describe, their equivalents in Black History icons, their ancient symbolism, and how they apply to the real world, street culture, and everyday life.
