First off thank you to Emagine Theatres and Sony Pictures for inviting me and The WHIP & AK Show ft Big Pak to an early screening of Fly Me to the Moon ! Unfortunately I couldn't go but our colleague Jordan J. Scavone represented for us and here is his review!

JORDAN'S REVIEW OF "FLY ME TO THE MOON"

Fly Me to the Moon directed by Greg Berlanti, written by Rose Gilroy and staring Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones (a Manhattan advertising executive) and Channing Tatum as Cole Davis (Launch Supervisor for the Apollo missions) with supporting cast members Ray Ramono as Henry Smalls, Anna Garcia as Ruby Martin, Jim Rash as Lance Vespertine, and Woody Harrelson as Moe Berkus.

The quick synopsis of the film sees Cole Davis attempting to get Apollo 11 to the moon, but due to the Vietnam War the US government and their citizens have wanning interest in NASA and the Moon, their funding is all but gone. Enter Moe Berkus, a pseudo-black ops operative working for President Nixon brings in Kelly Jones to “Sell NASA and The Moon to the American People”. Kelly wants sponsors, Cole feels sponsors aren’t what NASA is about, but it would be really nice to have the water flowing from the sinks again. Kelly is able to bring in big sponsors (TANG) and turns Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins into some of the biggest celebrities in the world. With American needing “the win” of getting to the Moon before Russia, Berkus introduces Project Artemis (Artemis being the twin of Apollo in Greek Mythology) to fake the Moon landing on a sound stage to ensure America wins! This movie is a great hybrid of comedy, drama, and romance that ultimately turns into a high-quality film with some phenomenal performances.

In my opinion Tatum turns out one of, if not his best all-round performance. He is charming, funny, a bit of jerk, but the passion for space and getting Apollo 11 to the Moon really comes through. Johansson shows off a lot of comedic range using multiple accents, and character choices that you don’t usually get to see from her. Anna Garcia is the charming assistant to Johansson who lights up her scenes, and Jim Rash is easily the funniest part of the moving playing the flamboyant director Lance to a tee. Harrelson shines in his scenes in the way that only he can, always drawing attention but never stealing it from his co-stars. Then there is Ray Ramono, who in my opinion is the unsung hero of this movie. He turns in a performance that I could see leading to him picking up a couple of award nominations and maybe even a win. I never thought I would say “Ray Ramono almost made me cry by the end of this movie.” Could this movie be the start of a “Ray-naissances”? I kind of hope so after this movie.

The direction and cinematography are very strong and consistent throughout, doing a phenomenal job at making this a period piece that doesn’t feel like a period piece. There were times I forgot this movie took place in 1969, but in a good way. It was smooth, well set dressed, and a lot of care was put into making this movie feel genuine. The soundtrack was great with some great song choices. The score was done by Oscar nominated composer Daniel Pemberton and really made you feel the whimsy and wonder of space and gave me several Goonies vibes while staring up at the stars.

All-in-all, this was a very enjoyable film and one that combined two of my favorite things, Space and Movies. There was clear passion for NASA and the Apollo 11 mission form the cast and crew, and this is definitely a movie I will be picking up on Blu-Ray when it comes out. Also, keep an eye out for black cats.
