When we initially saw Phool she was afraid that she was all alone in the station. Manju Mai told her, that her family made her "burbak". She doesn't know the address of her own house. But, in India, most of the girls are not like Jaya, they are Phools. The discrepancy of phhool and Jaya is evident. Jaya was fearless from the very first scene. phool learned it in the journey. They are complementary to each other. They need a push. I once read somewhere you have to come out of your comfort zone to be a confident person. You have to face problems to deal with life. Phool was abandoned by her fate in the train station. She learnt many things within those days. But the thing she learned most is courage. It takes courage to be free. Phool is as simple as her smile.
As she wanted to do for Manju mai she made kalakand. A sweet which has "kala", in its name. It's her kala, her talent. She can cook well, she learned that very well. We initially see Deepak eating those kalakand at her house. The sweetness of phool, which is also in Deepak. Deepak fell in love with phool and the sweetness of Kalakand.
Then in the train station, she made kalakand for the manju mai's store. It became an instant hit. Manju Mai offered her money. we see how Phool took in her pallu. It's the sheer happiness of your first paycheck. For Phool, it was the same, but as her talent became distinguishable, her soul became free and independent.
Manju Mai, who had never indulged in Phool's creation, finally savoured the Kalakand as Phool bid farewell. In that fleeting moment, Phool imparted a piece of her sweetness onto Manju Mai's bitter existence, a lasting memento of their shared journey.
The sweetness of kalakand, which is the fragrance of phool gave Manju mai a sweetness in her bitter life. The sweetness gave Deepak an emory to remember her when she was not around. But most importantly her kala or her talent gave her the freedom, which she wanted, but knew that it was that simple to be free. Her talent granted her the ultimate gift: freedom. It was the sweetness of Kalakand. ❤️❤️
