SCOIL SAMHRAIDH WILLIE CLANCYJuly 6th – 14th, 2024www.scoilsamhraidhwillieclancy.com Na Píobairí Uilleann (NPU), the society promoting the interests of uilleann piping and uilleann pipers, began a partnership with the Willie Clancy Summer School in 1974, the second year of the school’s existence. NPU itself was then a relatively new organisation in the Irish traditional world, having been founded in 1968. At that stage both NPU and Scoil Samhraidh Willie Clancy could be said to be establishing their roles in the promotion of Irish traditional music.50 years on, their identities have been well established and the partnership is still flourishing. NPU is an integral part of the summer school programme, organising the piping workshops and recitals during the week and contributing to the ethos of the school. The piping workshops have been located in the Ballard Road area of Miltown Malbay since the beginning, centred on the old vocational school. The vocational school building has now been transformed into a large multi-purposed complex, comprising a library, social services centre, and a campus of the Limerick & Clare Education and Training Board. The pipers use these facilities and also utilize some 40 rooms in private houses in the vicinity, illustrating the growth in piping studies over the decades. We will be marking the 50th anniversary of this collaboration in July with a series of events noting the contribution of NPU to the summer school, and the strong connections between Dublin and Clare pipers that existed long before the emergence of either organisation. For full details see www.scoilsamhraidhwillieclancy.com
Ceolaireacht Series 2 Starting Sunday the 21st of January 2024, 9.45pm on TG4YouTube Clip https://youtu.be/gOgB_UZtIUsTG4's traditional musical series, 'Ceolaireacht' (Musical Wanderings), returns with presenter Doireann Ní Ghlacáin. Armed with her fiddle and bicycle, she embarks on another musical journey, exploring lesser-known traditional musical strongholds across Ireland and beyond. While Sliabh Luachra, Co. Clare, and Donegal are famous for their recognizable regional styles, Doireann is determined to uncover emerging uncelebrated and styles in other parts of the country, such as North Tipperary, Cork City, North Mayo, and even London. The series reflects the current renaissance of Traditional Irish Music, experiencing a flourishing resurgence throughout the country and beyond. Particularly noteworthy is the growing interest and innovation among the younger generation. Traditional music, once confined to small pockets, is now thriving and captivating a whole new audience.Doireann commences her journey in London, a city steeped in Irish musical history due to the migration waves during the 50s and 80s. Meeting with key figures such as Reg Hall, instrumental in the iconic recording 'Paddy in the Smoke' capturing London's music scene in 1968, and connecting with young musicians like Eimear McGeown and Rita Farrell, Doireann explores the vibrant intersection of classical and traditional music. A visit to the renowned Irish pub, Brendan the Navigator, introduces her to Seáinín Phat Mhaidhle from Conamara and James Óg Carty, a talented fiddle player from the musical Carty family.Returning to Ireland, Doireann criss-crosses the country, exploring the traditional music styles of the current generation in North Tipperary, Cork, and Mayo. Conversations with a diverse array of musicians and singers, including Jackie Daly, Matt Cranitch, Laoise Ni Chinnéide, Gerry O’Connor, Julie Langan, Keelan McGrath, Séamus Ó Mongáin, Séamus Deane, Joe Carey, Liam Mac Conga
KINNFOLK : STAR ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN www.kinnfolkmusic.comVirginia-based Celtic folk duo, Kinnfolk, have begun work on their latest studio album: Star Above the Mountain. The album—a collection of original music exploring the history, geography, and folk legends of Roanoke, Virginia—began in 2022 as a grant project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts and the City of Roanoke. The resulting body of work debuted to a live audience in June 2023.Since forming Kinnfolk in late 2018, Josh and Julie Kinn have played at festivals and listening rooms with a quickly growing following across Canada and America. In 2023 Kinnfolk won the Robinson Emerging Artist Showcase, earning them a Main Stage appearance at Canada’s premiere Celtic event, the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival. The pair weave octave mandolin, bodhrán, and smooth vocal harmonies into their Celtic folk music from the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, spinning yarns steeped in Appalachian charm. From sea shanties and working songs, to trad tunes and old-time favourites, Kinnfolk’s fresh take on classics blends seamlessly with their original compositions. The new album, Star Above the Mountain, is slated to be released in 2024. MARY-KATE SPRING LEE : TUNES IN THE MORNING www.marykatespring.comTunes in The Morning is Mary-Kate Spring Lee’s first solo Irish harp album, and is essentially a capstone for her year of study with internationally acclaimed Irish harpist Grainne Hambly. In 2022 and 2023 Lee was awarded a Master/Apprenticeship Grant from PA Council on the Arts to study with Grainne Hambly, a long-time musical role model of Lee’s. While Lee is not a newcomer to Irish music, and performs both as a soloist and with her Celtic Folk band Seasons, Tunes in the Morning marks a new milestone in her arranging and performing capabilities. The tunes featured on the album are ones learned from Grainne and many were also her competition pieces in the 2023 Mid-Atlantic Fleadh, where Lee won first place in both Senior Harp Dance Tunes and Senior Harp Slow Airs. The title, Tunes in the Morning is a playful nod to Lee's current stage in life-mother of three children under four. Lee was at first hesitant to apply for the grant since she wasn’t sure when she would be able to find the time to practice. That time ended up falling between 6:30-7:30a.m. in the morning, when Lee would strive to sit at the harp whenever possible. Although the year of study proved more intense and challenging than Lee anticipated (including the challenges of recording an EP!) she is proud of the journey she has made as a musician. From the flowing Caves of Kiltanon jig to the joyous Trip to Durrow reel set, Tunes in the Morning grants glimpses of the beautiful treasury of Irish tunes, and the magic and range of emotions captured on the Irish harp.Find out more at: www.facebook.com/marykatespringleewww.marykatespring.comhttps://mary-katespring.bandcamp.com
