Happy National Women's History Month! March is a time to honor the countless contributions of women throughout history, and we're excited to highlight some incredible trailblazers.

Julia Reichert, also known as the "godmother of American independent documentaries," was a feminist and Midwestern story curator. She co-founded New Day Films and earned a Career Achievement Award from the International Documentary Association.

Reichert authored the first book on self-distribution in independent film, and her films include three Academy Award nominees. "The Last Truck" documented the final GM truck produced at the Moraine assembly line.

Happy National Women's History Month! March is a time to honor the countless contributions of women throughout history, and we're excited to highlight some incredible trailblazers.

Julia Amanda Perry was a pioneering neoclassical composer born on March 25, 1924, in Kentucky. Her mother encouraged her love for music and after studying in Princeton, New Jersey, she wrote several notable compositions including Stabat Mater and Homage to Vivaldi. Perry studied in Florence and Paris on Guggenheim fellowships, returned to the US to teach at Florida A & M College and later Atlanta University. Her innovative and experimental style led to acclaim in the 1960s, and several of her works were performed by major orchestras.

Perry suffered two strokes in the 1970s but continued to compose using her left hand. She died in Akron, Ohio at the age of 55, leaving behind a legacy of 12 symphonies, two concertos, and three operas.

Judy Heumann, known as "the mother," of the disability rights movement, played a key role in disability rights demonstrations, helped pass disability rights laws, founded advocacy organizations, held federal government positions, and co-authored her memoir, Being Heumann, and Rolling Warrior. Her contributions were also highlighted in the Oscar-nominated documentary film, Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution.

Sadly, Judy passed away on March 4, 2023, in Washington, D.C.

In 1978, NASA hired its first six female astronauts - Sally Ride, Shannon Lucid, Kathy Sullivan, Rea Seddon, Anna Fisher, and Judy Resnik - who all eventually flew in space, breaking barriers and paving the way for future generations.
