Yall know what today is so it's only right I give you all a fun fact about the NFL.....

Fritz Pollard stands out as a significant figure in American football history. He was one of the first African American players in the National Football League (NFL) and became the first African American to coach in the NFL in the early 1920s. Pollard broke color barriers at a time when segregation was widespread in the United States. His skill and determination on the field, along with his leadership as a coach, paved the way for generations of African American athletes in professional football. Pollard's legacy is not just as a pioneering athlete and coach but also as a trailblazer who fought for racial equality in sports and beyond. His contributions are recognized in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, where he was inducted in 2005, celebrating his monumental impact on the game and its history.

Black History Fun Fact

Dr. Patricia Bath was a pioneering ophthalmologist and inventor who broke ground in both her research and inventions. Born in 1942, she became the first African American woman doctor to receive a patent for a medical invention. Dr. Bath's most notable invention is the Laserphaco Probe, patented in 1988, which revolutionized the treatment of cataracts. The device uses a laser to vaporize cataracts, allowing for a less painful and more precise removal of cataracts, followed by the easy insertion of new lenses. Her invention not only transformed the field of ophthalmology but also helped restore the sight of individuals who had been blind for over 30 years. Dr. Bath's work significantly advanced the technology for treating and restoring vision, making her a trailblazer in both medicine and the African American community.

Robert Smalls was an incredible figure in American history who made a daring escape from slavery during the Civil War. On May 13, 1862, Smalls, a skilled sailor and slave, commandeered a Confederate transport ship, the CSS Planter, in Charleston, South Carolina. He disguised himself as the captain and navigated the ship past several Confederate checkpoints. Smalls then surrendered the ship to Union forces, gaining freedom for himself, his family, and the crew's other enslaved members. His remarkable act of bravery and intelligence not only secured his freedom but also made him a hero in the North. Smalls went on to have a significant post-war career, serving as a U.S. Congressman representing South Carolina during Reconstruction. His life is a testament to courage, resilience, and the fight for justice.

Black History Fun Fact

Alice Coachman was a groundbreaking athlete who became the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal. At the 1948 London Olympics, she soared to victory in the high jump, setting a new Olympic record at the time with a jump of 5 feet 6 1⁄8 inches (1.68 meters). Despite facing significant racial and gender barriers throughout her career, Coachman's remarkable achievement paved the way for future generations of athletes. She remained the only female American athlete to win a gold medal in those games and was celebrated for breaking new ground not just in sports, but in the broader movement for racial equality in the United States.

Did you know that Shirley Chisholm was the first African American woman elected to the United States Congress? She represented New York's 12th Congressional District from 1969 to 1983. Not only that, but in 1972, she became the first woman to run for the Democratic Party's presidential nomination.
