"We basically fly in nature—with nature. We fly with the birds..."
—Ulrich Neumann

Gliding (also called “soaring” by professionals) is one of the most unique ways to fly. The Carolina Soaring Association makes it even more unique, by launching planes—that already don’t have engines—into the air using a winch that’s also on the ground. It is my distinct pleasure to introduce you to the newest publication in Western North Carolina. Our mission is to explore the activities and resources that have made Western North Carolina a quality-of-life destination for over a century, encouraging our readers to participate in cultivating a thriving community.

The name Hearth was chosen by virtue of being the foundational element of a home. Families and friends have gathered around the hearth for many millennia, and its warmth and community personify a high improvement in the quality of life for humanity.

That same quality of life is critical to the future of Western North Carolina—it’s what has inspired folks to put down roots here for centuries now. In honor of that idea, this publication is entirely sponsored by me (Oby) as a Real Estate agent with Christie’s International. Learn more about that work and the charitable commitment that I make with every dollar of commissions here.

This magazine reflects my love and commitment to the region of which I am fortunate to be a third-generation resident. I hope to inspire you and others to soak up every bit of the amazingness that living here can allow. I hope you enjoy the content that we have—and will continue to curate for your enjoyment.

— Oby Morgan (Publisher & Editor)

Join us in watching local Asheville Artist and Bonsai Professional, Daniel Coffey, repotting a 30+ year-old Texas Elm tree.

Daniel’s apprenticeship was with Junichiro Tanaka, the fourth-generation owner of Aichien Bonsai Nursery in Nagoya, Japan. Upon returning to the United States, he went directly into an internship at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum. Daniel now maintains a studio in Asheville’s River Arts District where he styles and photographs his bonsai in addition to teaching.
