For almost 50 years, Hermosa Beach has been celebrating the morning of July 4th by transforming this calm pacific town, south of LA, into the site of a gnarly Ironman unlike any other. This is a story about a thrilling tradition of sprinting, paddling, and beer-chugging. The Hermosa Beach Ironman kicks of with a one mile run down the beach, competitors then grab their surfboards and complete a one mile paddle, and finally they return to beach and drink six beers. Throw up and you’re disqualified! While drinking alcohol on LA’s beaches is illegal, yellow tape marks a 50 square yards area where the law does not apply.
