Shane (CEO), Joe (Community Manager), and Alec (Artist) recently attended MayhemCon 2023 in Lebanon, NH, We had a blast interacting with other convention folks, vendors, and gamers at our table (you can see it in the back left corner). Here you can see the table where Joe was running one of our adventures "Hunted in the Snow Barrens". Everyone seemed to have a great time and it was a lot of fun.

Fun Fact: Most of the staff working for Headless Hydra Press met during grad school while we attended the Stonecoast MFA Program. While Shane began Headless Hydra, our good pal Frank Ard founded Rogue Owl Press and we are proud to share that as writers, we've created another short horror fiction anthology called Horrors of the Deep through Rogue Owl by contributing some awesome stories. Bori Brightmaker is an NPC we created recently for our Villains & Villagers Kickstarter but we plan on featuring her more regularly because she's a camp cook and will someday have a cookbook featuring her recipes. We've been super busy packing up all the Kickstarter orders for Organic Towns and Adventurer's Agency, so we haven't been around much to post but just wanted to give a quick update. We're doing well here at HHP and we just recently received around 5 FEET or more of snow over the past couple days. WHEW!

In the office today while I work on finishing up the NPCs for our Kickstarter, Villains & Villagers, Shane is folding up maps to fulfill Organic Towns and Adventurer's Agency orders. Even though most of the OGL stuff is behind us, we find ourselves looking to diversify our TTRPG focus and so lately I've been personally delving into the world of Pathfinder. If you're interested, we've published some blog posts recently about Pathfinder since our audience poll indicated they'd like to see more content for that particular game but there are so many others, too. What are your favorites? Some other personal faves of mine are Alien: The Roleplaying Game and I'm excited about the upcoming Marvel Superheroes TTRPG. Working for a TTRPG company has its perks. We often will playtest new TTRPGs, watch movies or shows, or just generally have fun in the office. Lately, Shane and I have been into Warhammer 40k when we have downtime. I've been building up my Blood Angels force and painting them, and I've also got some Necrons. He's going to be playing against me with Astra Militarum soon.

Well, our newest Kickstarter - VILLAINS & VILLAGERS - just launched today. It's a book of NPCs divided into multiple categories, along with advice on crafting or altering NPCs on your own, complete with character portraits, randomized tables for those who wish to add more variety, and even more surprises like tavern menus. Each NPC is system neutral and able to be placed in almost any setting with minimal tweaking. Random generators are fun but limited. Check us out here! With all the insanity around the OGL finally so far put to rest, one thing that was nice about it was how everyone began talking about TTRPGs other than D&D. One of our favorites is Alien: The Roleplaying Game by Free League Press. With the new OGL issues through Wizards of the Coast and D&D, there's been talk of boycotting D&D and other WotC products such as Magic the Gathering. We here at Headless Hydra Press are a very small independent business and have come to understand that other small businesses might be impacted by this, namely local game stores. So, if you're planning on dropping D&D, think about moving to another game system which your local game stores can still provide for you. Whether that's Pathfinder, or Aliens: The Roleplaying Game, or some other format like Warhammer 40k - whatever it is, try those out to help your local game stores survive during this crazy TTRPG whirlwind. We're all in this together!

Just FYI - our Kickstarter goes live on Tuesday, 01/31 at 10am EST. We've had a blast at Headless Hydra Press coming up with these fun NPCs and we've tried to make them as useful and unique as possible. Completely system neutral and it won't be hard to place them in any game setting you wish. Plus, there are tips for creating NPCs, for roleplaying the NPCs included, and there will be character portraits and even some full color artwork (plus a few more surprises). Well, I just submitted my feedback to WotC on their proposed changes to the OGL. Here is an excerpt of my feedback:

“I am extremely concerned that the OGL 1.0a will be revoked given that it has existed for multiple editions and the people who wrote it believed it would be perpetual and irrevocable.
WotC should absolutely be able to make a new
OGL for OneD&D but it cannot revoke previous licenses.
For OGL 1.2, I am concerned that the Morality Clause gives too much power to WotC with no ability for creators to appeal decisions. The OGL
1.0a already provides protections against hateful content being made by creators. I am also concerned that the VTT portion is anti-competitive and that it will attempt to stop VTT platforms that are already being used. I am concerned that creators will not have a right to a trial by jury as this clearly benefits WotC over creators. I am very concerned that 1.2 says that WotC will not own creator content but it does not specifically prohibit WotC from republishing 3rd party content as their own. Given OGL 1.1, this must be absolutely clear. Lastly, I am concerned that OGL includes several loopholes that will essentially allow WotC to void the new OGL whenever they want. It would be impossible for me as a creator to publish under this license.

For 23 years, publishers and creators have made work in support of D&D. We have championed your products, provided untold volumes of reviews, "how tos", and created the foundation for WotC to approach D&D as a lifestyle brand.
When WotC released the deeply flawed 4e, third party publishers kept the gaming community alive and engaged so that when WotC released the far better 5e, they did not need to try to build their audience from scratch. There were already millions of former D&D gamers (who third party creators kept in the hobby) who were eager to return to D&D. We've reviewed your products, taught newcomers how to play, nurtured young DMs who go on to be your biggest lifetime consume.”
