Rock Around the Ages Radio. Rock Around the Ages Radio triggers memories to bring you back in time. Tune in for songs that survived the test of time and make the soundtrack to your past.

If you like 60’s girl groups, 70’s hard rock, or 1-hit wonders, we have a playlist for you! My name is Mike Harris, and I am a lifelong lover of music. My experience with radio dates back to the 1970’s. In a time when reel-to-reel tape and vinyl albums were the order of the day, I found pleasure in discovering the next big hits, as well as seeking out the obscure tracks that would fly under the ra

dar. Rock Around the Ages Radio began as a side-hustle in my home in San Diego, California. After sharing the playlists with friends and family, and getting a lot of positive feedback, I decided to share it with the world.

Asking all my Rock Around the Ages friends: I'm creating a new playlist of 60's and 70's Rock (actually, expanding on my current one, since there are so many songs I've missed),

Any of your suggestions would be welcome! I'm sure there's a nugget or 2, I just don't have. Thanks much!

We dug deep for some of these fun facts about Rock and Roll.
Did you know?
** People 50+ (classic rock lovers) collectively spend $3.2 trillion annually. ..
** Nearly half of surgeons (49%) choose rock to play in their operating room — and it’s almost all classic rock —
** In 1964 a band - can you guess? - made their debut on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York, there were 50000 requests for seats in a studio that held only 703 people.
** Bob Dylan said on his school yearbook that his ultimate dream was being in Little Richard’s band.
** Elvis was actually a natural blonde! Initially dyed his hair jet black with shoe polish
** bands formed in 1967 - Genesis, Blue Cheer, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, etc

There's much more I'll share in later posts.

Did any of you have one of these? ...WATERBEDS! The modern version was invented and patented in 1971 in San Francisco (I can't think of a more appropriate city, considering its influence on Rock music in the late 60's and early 70's). The popularity of waterbeds reached its peak in the mid-eighties before starting their decline.

On August 21, 1966, The Beatles decided to stop touring altogether. Driving rainstorms and unsafe working conditions, exhaustion and lack of security finally took its toll.

On August 29, they played their last concert date in San Francisco. 11 songs with “Long Tall Sally” being the last.

There was no public announcement. 56 years ago this week.

What came from this were improvements in many areas of concert production, including the advent of indoor concert arenas.

1963. Listening to your favorite AM station. Do you remember this opening line? "He went away and you hung around and bothered me every night"... Maybe you can still hum the rest. Performed by The Angels, 3 weeks at #1. "My Boyfriend's Back".

Interesting...The inspiration for the song came from co-writer Bob Feldman, who overheard a conversation between a high school girl and the boy she was rebuffing.

Paul McCartney wrote the song"Hey Jude"...54 years ago, July 26, 1968, he first introduced the song to John Lennon. Like many Beatles songs, "Hey Jude" was a subject of many interpretations.

According to McCartney, he wrote the song to comfort John Lennon's 5- year old son Julian, after Lennon had left his wife, Cynthia (Julian's mother) for the Japanese artist Yoko Ono.

There's so much history behind the writing and production of this song, I highly recommend you read about it, especially if you're a fan.

"Hey Jude" began its rise up the charts in the U.K and U.S, and is considered by some the greatest song ever written.

Have you ever wondered where some of your favorite rock bands came up with their names? Here's a list of 5, to peak your curiousity.

THE BEATLES - In the late 50's as the band was forming, they were big fans of Buddy Holly and his group "the Crickets.” John loved wordplay so he thought of several insect names and finally settled on “Beetles". Sounding to much like a "crawly insect", he thought the name should represent "beat music" instead. Thus, the change (as the story goes...)

The ANIMALS - Eric Burdon, formerly lead singer of the "Kansas City Five" left the band and eventually helped in the formation of the Animals in 1963. The name supposedly came from their powerful and ferocious style , OR a tip of the hat to a good friend nicknamed "Animal." (as the story goes...)

GRAND FUNK RAILROAD - There was a train overpass in their hometown of Flint, Michigan which read "Grand Trunk Railroad". As simple as that....

THE 5TH DIMENSION - Formerly the "Versatiles", they signed a new record deal in 1966 on the condition that they update their name and image, and thus The Fifth Dimension was born.

ROLLING STONES -The band got their name from an old saying, "A rolling stone gathers no moss." (It was also the title of a 1950s Muddy Waters song.)

These are just a few. I'll have others in future posts.

Do any of the 60's 1-Hit Wonders hold a special place in your heart? They do mine. Remember "Friday On My Find" by the Easybeats"? 1967. Today, I hear some of these songs and am immediately taken back to that exact moment in time. Here are 5 more of my favorites:

1968 - Actor Richard Harris goes to #2 with his 7:00 reading of “MacArthur Park.” Very nice song, perhaps too long for radio standards of the day? Today, we'll pivot from the shortest Rock N Roll songs, to the longest... Here are 6 (in no particular order).

Jethro Tull - "Thick As A Brick" a whopping 43:30
Iron Butterfly – “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" 17:05
Rare Earth – “Get Ready” 21:30
Pink Floyd – “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” 26:01
Bob Dylan - "Desolation Row" 11:21
The Allman Brothers Band – “Mountain Jam” 33:41

By no means the end of this list. What other songs belong?

Here at Rock Around the Ages Radio, we're tempted to play one of these classics, but maybe they're just a little too long?? What do you think?

Tomorrow, June 16, is the 57th Anniversary of Bob Dylan's "Like A Rolling Stone". Considered revolutionary at the time, the song was also one of the longest ever recorded at the time, 6:34. During the 60's, the most successful songs were recorded at 2:00 or LESS in length. Here are 6 songs from the 60's you may remember that made the cut...
The Box Tops, "The Letter" (1:55) - 1967
The Beatles, "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?" (1:41) - 1968
Ray Charles, "Hit the Road Jack" (2:00) - 1961
The Who, "Tommy, Can You Hear Me?" (1:37) - 1969
The Rolling Stones, "Not Fade Away" (1:48) -1964
The Beach Boys, "Little Deuce Coupe" (1:40) - 1963

Perhaps Less is More? "Like A Rolling Stone" made sure it
wasn't...
