About Our Guest:
La Rhonda Crosby-Johnson, a graduate of San Francisco State University, was born and raised in Oakland, California. The oldest of two children, La Rhonda demonstrated her innate leadership abilities at an early age. La Rhonda's passion for education and community services found its place in the social work department.
Despite fond childhood memories and being surrounded by a loving, encouraging and supportive family, La Rhonda's days were not free of pain or tragedy. Losing her mother to breast cancer, left La Rhonda primarily responsible for raising her younger sister. Barely 17 years old, La Rhonda remained at the top of her high school class, found time to meet the responsibilities of her church youth program; all while nurturing and supporting her sister. Barely four years later, La Rhonda would lose two more loved ones; an older cousin who was more like a big sister and her "favorite" grandmother. When asked how she made it through these times, La Rhonda credits her faith, the love of a powerfully supportive extended family, and inner strength.

About the Author:

I was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi 1972. One of my earliest memories are of me riding on a cotton sack pulled by my grandmother in a field. I remember the heat; it was so thick and heavy. I remember the scratches I got from the plants, it was like they were angry with the pickers. I remember trying to overcome my fears of getting bitten by one of the mouse hunting snakes I saw on the ground. Through that unmistakable recollection, I can’t help but feel I share that one true experience with Cathay. I also feel the cotton fields of the South are still stained with the blood and sweat of generations of American souls. As time and opportunity would have it, I left the farm and moved to Ohio. I briefly attended university before joining the military during the first Gulf War. I discovered the existence of Cathay while researching the Civil War in during my first tour in Afghanistan. From the farming fields to the battlefields, I found an unquenched thirst to learn more about African American participation in the conflict and the unsung historical figure who is Cathay Williams.

I was released October 2020. And that day I was released, processing everything was really overwhelming. The ride on the freeway was six hours. And my head felt like it wanted to explode when the car finally stopped and I had the opportunity to kind of get settled a little bit — I hadn’t been traveling at that rate of speed. For so long, my body was kind of like in shock, it was all new. My eyes were hurting from, like seeing so much on the side of the road, people and things like that. It took me a while to decompress and [accept] this is really happening. You’re out here released.

Hello my name is Keshia L. Williams, I have a love for the arts, music, people, and self expression. I moved from Newark, NJ to Atlanta, GA, to start the next chapter of life, moments, and inner peace.

My direction I want to go in is to discuss love, relationships, and raw feelings. My book Journey of a Poet is who I am, and what I have experienced in my life as a child, adolescent, just as well as coming into adulthood.

I’ve been writing since I was seven, and had a wise soul beyond my years since I was eight. I was given the opportunity to write children’s books, as a child, but was told I needed to enjoy my childhood in which I was stripped from unknowingly.

I have a voice and I want to share that with others to know spoken word is for the healing. It’s ok to release your past and speak out.

I wanted to be a psychologist, but I really realized later cognitive behavioral therapy is the way... just as well as life coaching. I want to give a person the opportunity to live out loud, live in their truth, and not be ashamed of who they are because strength is the key to excellence.

Lorna is the founder of Drive by Agony, a non-profit organization. As a trailblazer for the Stop the Violence movement, she has been a violence prevention specialist and victim’s advocate for 30 years..

Lorna has also received numerous awards from Los Angeles County and surrounding cities. She has been bestowed a Congressional award and was also honored by Women in Film. She has been recognized with awards from district attorneys, police and sheriffs.

She spoke at the SCLC women conference and walked in the company of women such as Coretta Scott King, and Mimi Till, Emmitt Till’s mother. She sat down and had a conversation with Rosa Parks while in Washington D.C.

Lorna is also an experienced urban organizer, specializing in gang intervention, victim’s advocacy and community organizing.
