If you haven’t listened to the episode on the Ohio train disaster, you should. BTW, Norfolk Southern chief executive told the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee that he was “deeply sorry” but didn’t say anything about long term medical costs. More on this in ep 52

On Feb. 3, a Norfolk Southern train carrying toxic chemicals derailed in East Palestine, Ohio, igniting a fire and setting off fears of an explosion. A new report shows that industrial companies are still dumping hazardous waste in our waterways, because I guess the clean water act means nothing to them? Idk. Among major watershed regions nationwide, the Ohio River basin received the largest volume of toxic chemical discharges by weight in 2020, according to the report, published today by the PennEnvironment Research & Policy Center. Other heavily polluted watersheds included the Mid-Atlantic watershed, which encompasses parts of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and New York; and the South Atlantic-Gulf, which encompasses Florida and parts of surrounding states. Pennsylvania’s waterways are ranked 4th highest for these toxic chemicals. This is concerning, as we just discussed reproductive health and environmental hazards few weeks ago.

Some news to ease your climate anxiety! The largest car manufacturer in the US, General Motors (16% market share, don’t sleep on them), has come out with a statement saying they support stricter emissions standards. They want new rules to go beyond CO2 and cover other pollutants and are hoping we can collectively see 60% reduction in GHGs by 2030. Truly, was not expecting Biden to get this much support on his climate goals, but we’re living for the positivity this week people! We need it… very badly.

Remember when the supreme court put limits on the EPA’s power to cap carbon emissions at the state level? Probably not because they did a lot of awful things this year and you’re tapped out. Well, the EPA is now reopening the GHG and smog rules from March thanks to the Inflation Reduction Act. EPA believes much greater zero-emission vehicle adoption rates are possible for 2027 through 2029 and we wanna believe them because we need some good news right now.

We’ve discussed China’s treatment of Uyghurs in Xinjiang multiple times, and the latest human right report from the UN means that no fashion companies can claim deniability any longer. The “vocational centers” where China keeps Uyghurs amount to detention centers, and forced labor is not justified by cheap clothes. Zara, Nike, Lacoste, and other clothing companies must stand up for human rights and commit to sustainable sourcing that is inclusive.

22/09/2022

At some point, we have to explore our role in allowing companies, and the industry at large, to convince us we need new clothes for every occasion. Remember- . Also, we have a

The problem with climate disasters is that everything suffers, including health. Last week, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned of the threat of further spread of malaria, dengue fever and other water and vector-borne diseases. This will not stop here, as we are already seeing drought, famine, cyclones, and erratic weather across the globe. The current situation in Pakistan is worse than the aftermath of their historic 2010 floods, so damage costs to the environment, infrastructure, and lives will continue to grow. It’s time to take action and mitigate climate change- the big emitters need to be responsible.

08/09/2022

We have talked many times about the “loss and damage” cost that a low emitter like Pakistan (less than 1% contributor to global emissions) pays for the rapid expansion of more developed nations. The UN just agreed to recognize this term formally at last year’s COP. With Pakistan suffering devastating effects, relief has come in form of aid from the UN with $160 million. The U.S. has pledged $30 million, the U.K. roughly $17.3 million and Canada around $3.8 million. These are not long term solutions however, and with everything going on, it might be time to start including these costs beforehand. Pakistan today, who knows where tomorrow?

In a time when we have passed our planetary boundary for synthetics, human and are at a greater risk than ever. The new Union “restriction roadmap” seeks to combat this problem and could affect up to 12,000 substances that would now be viewed as chemicals. This is kinda crazy news because the tends to drag its feet when it comes to chemicals, so this plan including whole classes like flame retardants and other .forever chemicals’ is an unprecedented, but welcome development.

A seismic survey planned by one of our least favorite companies, Shell, has been stopped by a South judge. The survey would have been in preparation for oil exploration off of South Africa’s wild coast. Members of the stood up against the giant to protect the coastline and according to a federal judge “expert evidence establishes that there is a reasonable apprehension of real harm to life.” Another win for the thanks to collective action!

In 2017, a ruling was issued to stop what would be the largest open-pit gold mine in the by mining. The court’s decided then that the based company’s meeting with the local people as well as studies conducted did not meet necessary criteria. However, the company decided to double down on pettiness and try again, but just this week, a federal court upheld the decision. We love to see indigenous people get a win, especially when the win is also for our precious !

The surface is already 0.1 pH units lower than it was before the Industrial Revolution and ~150 percent increase in ocean acidity is predicted by the end of the century if we do nothing.
