Scam alert! If someone calls you and say they are a deputy with a police department and tells you to send money or a warrant for your arrest will be issued it’s a scam. They will know your address name phone numbers etc. We don’t ask for money over the phone. Another scam going on is social security. They will tell you to send money over the phone. Do not go and get money cards and pay these scammers. Do not give out personal information bank accounts, social security etc. just hang up or tell them your calling the local police. Please share this post! We have had several complaints lately.

Press release:

Last night 1/28/23 Cpl. Steven Mullins was doing a DUI patrol when he attempted to make a traffic stop on a red pickup truck, the driver then continued to increase his speed and flee from Cpl. Mullins. The vehicle then broke down on Grassy Creek Rd. in the Leivasy area, and the suspect fled on foot into a wooded area. Other officers arrived on scene and located the suspect who was identified as Kermit Hammons. Cpl. Mullins noticed an empty baggy near the suspect and when asked, the suspect advised that he ate the drugs. As the suspect was being transported to the NC jail for processing he advised the drugs he ate was Fentanyl, and at that time the suspect turned blue and went unconscious.

Thankfully the quick actions of the transporting officers Ptlm. Caruthers and Ptlm. Woods, they swiftly administered narcan to Mr. Hammons saving his life. We’d like to thank the WV State Police, Nicholas County Sheriffs Department, and Richwood PD for their assistance.

Mr. Hammons is charged with: fleeing DUI, driving revoked DUI, DUI 2nd offense, & possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl.

The suspect was taken to Summersville Regional Medical Center where he was treated and released. He is currently being transported to Central Regional Jail to await arraignment.

Great work by everyone involved!

COLD WEATHER REMINDER!!!

As the outdoor temperatures start to drop, cats will hide under car hoods for protection and warmth.

Use caution when you start your car in the cold winter months ahead. If cats are left outside, they may climb under the car hood for protection from the cold. Before you climb into your car, slap the hood or open it for a quick look around.

I would like to take this chance to comment on the incredible responses from everyone with regards to my leaving the Deputies position at James Monroe High School. What was supposed to be a one year stint has turned into a 12 year experience. I initially and reluctantly agreed (or Sheriff Gravely was going to volun-told) me to go. I've got to admit that my send off by the staff and faculty emotionally struck me and it was heart felt. I'm leaving alot of friends and work partners. Now, I leave reluctantly and saddened by another chapter closing. In light of the current events tearing at the very soul and fabric of our Nation, I can honestly say that if an event happened I would have given every fiber of my being to shut it down. I am incredibly grateful for the amount of trust bestowed in watching over our most precious assets; our kids. I've one more month on the road and than I'll leave the Sheriff's Department. Until than, take care, stay safe and on this Memorial Day; take five minutes to remember our fallen warriors. They deserve at least five minutes of our collective thoughts..
God bless,
Mike

Michael Heller , thank you for your years of service as a deputy, but most importantly, the PRO Officer for James Monroe High School for the past twelve years. Mike isn't retiring just yet but, May 27, 2022 was his last day as the high school Public Resource Officer. Students may never know his dedication, other than just being at the school. He was dedicated to the point to where their lives took priority over his each and every day. His interaction with the students came from the heart. He cares for each and every one of the students in Monroe County and showed it everyday. He mentored daily and lead by example. He taught classes sharing his experiences from his years as a US Marine and as an officer of the law. Mike would go above and beyond his job description to help staff with their daily tasks. So Mike, on behalf of every parent, student and citizen of Monroe County, THANK YOU.
