Sometimes, editors and readers simply do not agree. A writer for the University paper in 1961 labelled submission time “Ni**odtime,” remarking on the “lunatic fringe” and the hopefuls with “absurd works” seeking publication.

Tiffany Mi's "Counterintelligence," a Ringold Honorable Mention, is the poem of the week. The footnotes of this poem are what drive the message home, and we appreciate the attention to detail with the italics and spacing of the poem.

Zen Ren's "Content Violation" was our Ringold Award Winner this year. We greatly enjoyed reading and publishing this piece, but we are currently trying to avoid our own violations through the posting of the piece. We hope you enjoy this short story just as much as we did.

Divya Maniar is our short story piece of the week. "Yes. Of course I believed in ghosts: I even went so far as to befriend one." Maniar's short story is a wonderful blend of the understanding of mourning death and a knowledge of something beyond our present moment while also bringing in the very real concerns we face while still living.

We are happy to announce the official arrival of Ni**od's 2024 spring/summer issue, Refuge. What is refuge? How do we pursue or find it? The concept is rather abstract and wildly different for many people, and the authors within represent that very conundrum. We are grateful to the work of all the authors, editors, and the artist for the production of this issue.

Today we say goodbye to Editor-in-Chief Eilis O’Neal, who is leaving the journal. Announcements about Ni**od’s incoming leadership will be made soon, but for now, we’d like to share a few words from Eilis.

"This week marks the end of my time as Editor-in-Chief of Ni**od International Journal. Though I had looked forward to spending more years with the journal, life is a story in progress, and sometimes the next chapter takes a turn you didn’t expect.

My story with Ni**od started when I walked into our offices as a college freshman in the fall of 1999. Having grown up on Hollywood images of the publishing industry, I’d expected a shiny, sleek place and was a bit surprised by Ni**od’s overstuffed, ramshackle rooms, but I quickly learned that, as with books, what mattered at Ni**od was what was inside and not how it looked on the outside. And what was inside Ni**od was a profound and lasting love of poems and stories. I have been proud to serve Ni**od as an intern, Associate Editor, Managing Editor, and Editor-in-Chief, because I believe that our mission is a vital one. One of the very best things about stories in all their forms is their ability to bring us new understanding and appreciation of those who are different from ourselves. To spend twenty-four years of my life sharing the work of first-time writers, writers from across the globe, and writers from historically marginalized groups has been a privilege, and an endeavor that I am glad to have been part of.

I am deeply grateful to our Ni**od readers, writers, and supporters, and I am especially grateful to the members of our Editorial and Advisory boards, both present and past. Ni**od would not exist without the writers who share their stories and talent with us, without the readers who look to Ni**od for unique and meaningful literature, and without the members of our boards who have volunteered their time, energy, and skills over the decades. One of the things I will miss most about working with the journal is the people I have shared it with, and I look forward to seeing what all the members of our literary family go on to accomplish. In short, I hope you’ll stay in touch.

Until our paths meet again:

Write bravely. Be kind. Read well."

—Eilis O’Neal, Editor-in-Chief, Ni**od International Journal
