Developed by Dr. Kurt Stille and Louis Blattner, this innovative technology was one of the first to use steel tape for magnetic recording, which allowed for more reliable and higher-quality sound reproduction compared to the previously used methods like phonograph records. The device was a breakthrough in the field of audio technology, offering a level of fidelity and convenience that had previously been unattainable.
The Blattnerphone was primarily used by the BBC and other broadcasters to record radio programs for later rebroadcasting, especially for international transmission. Before the advent of tape recorders, radio broadcasts had to be done live or recorded onto fragile discs, which were cumbersome to transport and had limited durability. The Blattnerphone’s magnetic tape allowed for better sound quality and the ability to store recordings for future use, enabling broadcasters to transmit programs to other countries and preserve content for later airings.
