Photos of the Burden Iron Company's former office building on Polk Street in South Troy, taken as part of the Historic American Engineering Record, National Park Service, historians Jack Boucher, Richard Po***ck, and Robert Vogel. Documentation that accompany the photos is dated August 1969.

Today, the building is the home of the Burden Iron Works Museum (Hudson Mohawk Industrial Gateway). From their website: "The Burden Iron Works Museum is located in the former Burden Iron Co. office building in South Troy. This building, constructed 1881-1882, once served as the headquarters of a major iron mill complex that stretched a mile along the Hudson River and employed nearly 2,000 men at its peak. Today it is virtually the only building left with a link to Troy’s past as a major iron center."

Another piece from our growing collection of election materials. Today, it’s a palm card from Lou Rosamilia’s successful campaign for Troy mayor in 2011. Rosamilia soundly defeated Carmella Mantello in the general election. During the same election, Troy Story alumni Lynn Kopka was elected council president (hear her story in the comments).

Rosamilia served from 2012 to 2015, and was succeeded by then-mayor Patrick Madden.

One of our favorite episodes of 2025 explored the life and accomplishments of Garnet Douglass Baltimore—one of Troy's most famous Black citizens—through the expert research of writer and local historian Suzanne Spellen.

Baltimore, a civil engineer and landscape architect, was the first Black graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1881) and designed Troy's historic Prospect Park.

Like reaching 700 subscribers on Instagram. BOOM 💥

Yeah, it’s pretty small compared to a lot of other accounts. But for our little DIY history podcast, it’s a fun milestone. Thanks for all the support, shares, and downloads/streams!

A comparison view of Union Street (facing north) taken from Fulton Street in historic downtown Troy.

This particular stretch of Union Street is located between 5th and 6th Avenues to the west and east, and Grand Street and Fulton Street to the north and south. Visible on the left side of both photos is the historic Gurley Precision Manufacturing Building (514 Fulton St, Troy).

The color photo (L) was taken on January 10, 2026. Can anyone estimate the date of the black and white photo? Let us know in the comments! ⬇

Four letters. One syllable. TROY.

On January 5th, 1789, a group of settlers living in an area known as Vanderhyden gathered at a local tavern. The purpose? To select a new name for their fledgling community along the Hudson River.
