NEW FEATURE: 3 SONGS IN OUR HEAD. There usually isn't much explanation. Sometimes you are just in the shower and a song pops in. Perhaps it sneaks in on a Netflix series or a commercial. But here are the three songs in our head for this week:

https://youtu.be/yLvpZwN9Oko

An overlooked gem from The Joshua Tree. The new version on Songs of Surrender is gawd awful, adding chintzy horns. Can't shake the ghost of this version.

https://youtu.be/g_QtO0Rhp0w

My head won't sit still whenever I hear this song. The air drumming on my car dashboard is cat-like. The guitar breaks sound like na-na-na-na-na-na-na in my head long after the song is over.

This one came out of nowhere. I can't remember the last time I actually listened to it. One day I just sat and wondered, "Who are the dead next door?" Was this some kind of 80's nuclear bad dream in the era of Reagan? One error, silent terror - the dead next door. It could happen anywhere. Sunday was hot, Monday was not?

One of our favorite Albums of all time is the debut of Sinead O'Connor, The Lion and the Cobra. This album tore up our hearts in a good way in 1987. Due to the limitations of the vinyl format, it only had 9 songs, of which came classics Troy, Mandinka, and Just Like You Said it Would Be. Deeper cuts like Jerusalem, the haunting lead off dirge Jackie and chill out dystopian Drink Before the War were also highlights. And now KJON dares to reimagine this classic album and its song order in order to experience it a new and fresh way! We also decided to expand the album of a few extra tracks recorded around the same era that fits the feel of the original to make it a more complete offering. Call it sacriledge but we dare you to listen to our Spotify playlist from start to finish (and no, definately not on shuffle mode). The goal is to reimagine the album be altering and adding songs, but keep the same spirit and flow of the original. Check it out here:

Our new playlist order:

1. Troy
2. Mandinka
3. I Wany Your Hands On Me
4. Drink Before the War
5. Jerusalem
6. The Value of Ignorance
7. Jackie
8. Just Like You Said it Would Be
9. Just Call Me JOe
10. Never Get Old
11. Still Listening
12. Heroine

What did you think about this landmark album? How does it hold up today? PLay it this week and tell us how you like or dislike our new order!

Trio for today...1994's Bad Religion Stranger Than Fiction; 1989's Peter Murphy Deep; 1990's The Alarm Standards.

So I just received the Bad Religion CD from an auction on eBay. It is the first time I've listened to it from start to finish in probably 10-15 years. It is a solid album which divided its fans. Some of their hardcore fans cry foul and smell selling out as it was their major label debut. It gained a lot of new fans as songs like Infected and 21st century digital boy we're in heavy rotation on alternative radio. MTV helps a little bit but it was their non-stop touring that won them their fans.

Next up is a modern rock classic 1989 Deep from Peter Murphy. This was his third solo album since stepping down from Bauhaus duties and was his most successful crossover to date. The modern rock smash Cuts You Up brought in new fans and old fans loved deeper cuts Like Marlene Dietrich Favorite Poem and a Strange Kind of Love. Crystal Wrists was sadly overlooked and is a standout track. I really enjoyed the first listen and listened to the CD two more times.

In the guilty pleasure album of the day we get the Alarm Standards which is a best of/ new song selection that came out in 1990 near the band's demise. Many of these songs bring back memories of Arena Rock social awareness and the days of Apartheid awareness and trying to connect spiritually to fans a la Simple Minds, Big country and U2. Today's listen sounds more like third generation The Clash. What once seemed like passion now sounds cliche. Some songs still excite me like Spirit of 76, Rain in the Summertime and Rescue Me but others like Sold Me Down the River I skipped.

Today we went to Rhino Records in Claremont. It was guilty pleasure night as we picked up a live Bryan Adams album, a classic late 80s Icehouse album, a rare acoustic Trash Can Sinatras album, and my all time favorite record from Robyn Hitchcock, Eye.
