Sharing more photos and details from Otto’s rescue story in August 2023.

After we got plenty of food and water into Otto, our next mission was finding a rescue to help us with his care and getting him cleaned up. His fur on his back was so stuck together with grime that after 2 baths, the water was running off of him grey and we weren’t even cracking the surface on the dirt he had in his fur. I knew we were going to have to shave it off, even though it made me sad to do so. He couldn’t fully stretch out and lay down because it was so tightly matted.

We grabbed our clippers and started to shave him. The hair was coming off in sheets of mats. I couldn’t believe how bad his fur was. The smell was awful, but we were just happy to get him more comfortable. Once we shaved the thick fur mats off, we gave him one more quick bath and dried him off. Although he was eating good with us, it was deeply sad to see that he looked like a bag of bones. He was still sleeping in his litter box most of the time, but was now able to fully stretch out to lay down and even made a loaf 🥹

At that point, we also heard back from an nyc based rescue Little Wanderers after calling around, reaching out to multiple and leaving messages. We were so happy to have some help with him. They asked if I was willing to foster him since their rescue doesn’t have a physical location and I said of course and that I just wanted to make sure he gets the care he needs. They asked me if I wanted to keep him and I didn’t want to give him up because I wanted to make sure that he lived out the life he deserves but I was nervous about introducing a new cat to our dynamic with the two kittens, so I told them I would let them know asap once we introduced him to the girls post vet visit.

I would spend hours sitting in the bathroom with him keeping him company, topping off his food and water and giving him pets. Even from the start, he was so loveable, looking hopeful, licking our hands and legs in appreciation as we nursed him back to health. He was still eating everything we put in front of him, and because of his determination, I believed in my heart that he was going to survive and thrive in time. (Cont.)

In honor of 1 year with Otto, I wanted to re-share bits of his story and share some photos I’ve never shared here before.

August 22, 2023, Otto showed up on our doorstep. When we checked our Ring camera going back after we found him, we saw that he had actually been sitting on our welcome mat for a while before going and sitting up on the stairs. When I opened the door and found him, my heart broke for the poor guy. He was all curled up and didn’t move an inch when I approached him. I rushed into our apt to get some water, afraid he would be gone by the time I got back, but there he was waiting for aid when I returned.

I stepped away to give him some space to drink and he gulped it down. Once he was finished, I slowly approached again, showing him my hand to sniff and tried picking him up. He didn’t resist at all. He had little strength and was just dangling there in my arms.

At the time we had the 2 girl kittens, Sam and Dean under a year old and I was nervous about getting them sick, so I put Otto in our bathtub with a litter box, food, water and blankets. He ate every bit of food I gave him and drank cup after cup of water. While he was eating, I noticed his leg was doubling in and he wouldn’t put weight on it. My first thought was that it was broken, but after inspecting it, his nails were curled in so bad he couldn’t step down on his paws. We immediately gave him a pawdicure to get him more comfortable while he purred in my lap then let him rest. He was so scared, that he took to his litter box for comfort over his blankets. (Cont.)

A letter to my dear old Otto on his 1st Gotcha Day 🥹

Dear Otto,
We made it! One whole year around the sun together since you chose our home as your solace. When I saw you sitting on the steps, I knew I had to do what I could to help you, but when you looked up at me and slow blinked in gratitude while sitting in our bathtub after your first meal in who knows how long, I knew you were going to be a part of our family for as long as you have left on this planet of ours. You’ve taught me so much this past year and not the things I thought I would learn.

You’ve taught me that you can have nothing but still have everything. You’ve taught me that it’s possible to find love and trust that things will be okay in your most desperate times. But most importantly, you’ve showed me that it’s never too late. Many people that saw your photos were trying to brace me for the tough reality that it wasn’t likely you would make it through the week. I didn’t care.

I wanted to make sure that whatever time you had left was a life of dignity and comfort. But guess what? You surprised us! I’ll admit, I am definitely surprised but so thankful that we are celebrating one whole year together. Over the past few months, you’ve opened up to us more and more, showing us more of your heart. Now when you sit on my lap and look up at me, I see how grateful you are that you landed with someone who gave you the life you always deserved.

Although it took us a while to meet, I think we were always meant to find each other. And who knows, we may be blessed with many more years together and I hope we are. That said, I’m here on the journey with you, day by day, and each day is a win. I love you old man Otto! Happy very first gotcha day! 🙏❤️🎉🐈

The holiday was good at our house and Otto has been socializing a bit more. We had my parents and their two dogs visiting and Otto would growl a bit when they got close and they would get the message and give him some space then he would walk by them with no problem and stayed out in the living room with everyone then made the walk to his litter box when he needed to go. They are on their way back home now, so I wanted to give a little glimpse of how he carries himself with us when we walk by or he is watching the other cats. He is still a bit nervous and runs around but then settles again after a few minutes 🙏

Happy Thanksgiving from our 3 turkeys 🙏❤️ - I’m not sure if the Christmas tree brought out the holiday spirit in Otto or what, but he has been exploring the apartment more these past two days and he and the girls were lounging together this morning as we watched the parade. Thankful for the little things 🐾

Otto Update 🐾 Otto is still doing good health wise with the same bathroom accidents outside of the box. We have recently swapped back to his old box to see if that helps a bit. He moves around fine, so it seems more like nervousness than bad habits or inability to make it to the box. To be honest, it’s been tough recently reflecting on the past year and seeing Otto lack the confidence to explore our home. He spends most of his day in a corner of our office room/spare room and doesn’t come out to the other rooms in our house often. We try to get him out by spreading treats out down the hallway but he isn’t comfortable walking around. Our girl cats are so good with them but if they just walk by, he panics, stiffens and hunches down sometimes growling. He will sometimes start to walk out of the office room but when he sees anyone or our other cats, he runs back to the corner. It makes us sad and wonder if we are able to provide him the home he deserves. It seems like he wants to explore more but is afraid and seeing him in the corner is so hard to watch. We spend the work day with him when we are working from home (like in this video) but he does spend hours in the room alone by choice which makes us sad. I saw a video recently about how there’s a reason why animals have a profile of what their preferences are for adopters and if I was defining that for Otto, I think he would thrive in a home with little visitors and no other pets where he has one person that he can feel comfortable around. We are giving Otto the best life we can and he is so sweet. It just breaks our hearts wondering if we are doing what is best for him. Maybe this is something other rescuers have experienced, so I wanted to share here and hoping to get some words of wisdom and support. Each day we keep doing everything we can for Otto and hope it’s the right thing for him. ❤️🙏

Is somebody gonna match my purr?

We have had some questions and comments related to Otto’s food being next to his litter box. Otto is very skittish and doesn’t explore a large area of our apartment. He also doesn’t have the best aim, and therefore requires an XL litter box. Combining that with an nyc sized apartment, it’s tough at times to keep things spaced out. We have relocated him from our living room to a spare room with more floor space where he has a bit more “safe space” to walk around. Our goal is to buy a house when we are able to and that will allow us to give Otto even more of his own space, but for now, this works for him and it’s the best we can do for sweet Otto ❤️🙏
