Catholic Bishops in Kenya have raised five key concerns in the proposed Finance Bill 2024, which they say must be addressed:

1. Basic Commodities

The Bill affects basic commodities such as bread, negatively impacting the poorest in our community.

2. Motor Vehicle Tax

The Bill introduces a 2.5% tax on the value of motor vehicles. This new tax on already-owned vehicles, in addition to existing taxes, will burden the common person by increasing public transport fares.

3. Impact on Current Climate Change Mitigation Efforts

The Bill may inadvertently undermine efforts to combat climate change, as SMEs and individuals might revert to using older, less fuel-efficient vehicles to avoid higher taxes on newer, fuel-efficient, hybrid, and electric cars.

4. Financial Transactions

The proposed increase in excise duty from 15% to 20% and VAT on mobile banking transactions will disproportionately affect lower-income customers, pushing them towards cash transactions and informal money storage methods.

5. Eco Levy

The Bill proposes an eco-levy on goods that negatively impact the environment, such as mobile phones, diapers, microphones, and plastic packaging bags.

=>The bishops urge the government to establish a tax regime that is predictable and conducive to economic growth, rather than one that stifles the private sector and overburdens the poor and vulnerable.

They also urge Members of Parliament to heed the people's cries and revise the contentious elatuses in the Finance Bill 2024,

✅ Retired President Uhuru Kenyatta does not have any Government Vehicle.
✅ The Fuel Cards that are supposed to be used by Uhuru Kenyatta's office were cancelled by State House.
✅ Uhuru Kenyatta has not been given an office by the Government as the Government Spokesperson alleged.
✅ There is an issue of Withdrawal of Staffs of Uhuru Kenyatta via phone calls and intimidation from State House.
✅ Former President Uhuru Kenyatta runs his office, fuel his vehicles and pays his staff through his own pocket. There is no Government funding to the former president and his office.
✅ The State House cannot substantiate where the Money meant for funding Former President Uhuru Kenyatta ends up.
✅ We want to categorically distance ourselves from the budget that was tabled concerning Retired President's office. We were not consulted, we don't know where the budget was prepared from.
✅ Ruto's Government withdrew the drivers and bodyguards of Former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
✅ The Staff of President Uhuru Kenyatta including Kanze Dena, have not been on the Government payroll for the last two years.

PLANE CARRYING MALAWI'S VICE PRESIDENT GOES MISSING

An aircraft carrying Malawi's Vice President, Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, has gone missing, sparking widespread concern and a massive search operation.

The plane, which was carrying nine other passengers, including security personnel and crew members, lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff from Lilongwe. The last known location of the aircraft was near the town of Mzuzu, where it was headed for an official visit.

The Malawi Defense Force has launched a search and rescue operation, with teams scouring the area for any sign of the missing plane. So far, no wreckage or signs of the aircraft have been found.

State House in Malawi has issued a statement, stating that Malawi's President, Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has been briefed on the situation and has ordered all available resources to be deployed in the search effort.

Dr. Chakwera has since cancelled a scheduled trip to the Bahamas. The State has further indicated that any developments on the situation would be availed as facts unfold.
