Good morning Fellow Lea Countians far and near. Did you ever wonder what Broadway Street in Tatum looked like in 1924, well here’s look at part of it (probably half). In this photo you are looking east down Broadway toward Texas.
The photo was taken just west of the intersection of Broadway and Main, note the broken wagon wheel in the middle of the street, must have been a blowout on a covered wagon.
A few of the buildings are identifiable, the first building on the left is the George Bilderback Mercantile. George was a native of Indiana being born there in 1854. George and his wife Frances raised their Grandson Lambert Eaton who was born in Arkansas in 1904. The Steakhouse in Tatum sits there now.
The next building is the Biles and later Gentry Hotel. Something of a landmark in the area being two stories and shaded by large trees. In 1933, an unarmed and wounded Oscar Adams was carried into the hotel to be doctored after being shot on Broadway, he did not survive.
Next is the Ford House and after that, only mysteries remain for me. On the right side of the photo, the BA is The First State Bank of Tatum. The Tatum bank was the first bank to incorporate in the year 1917, roughly 2 ½ months before Our Lea County was formed out of Chaves and Eddy counties on March 17th. However the bank went into voluntary liquidation on December 30, 1922, the First National Bank of Roswell was appointed by the State Bank Examiner as the liquidating agent. In this photo there appears to be a Barber Shop occupying the old bank building.
The gabled building just past the bank was the home and office of Dr. John Mitchiner Rumph who was born in Georgia in 1850.
As for the last building with the Star of the sign, Texaco Station?? I have no idea but just this side of the star was a grocery store/bakery owned by Elsie Cone.
Happy Trails!

⚠️Dense Fog Causing Very Low Visibility!
Pockets of dense fog are developing, mainly along a cold front moving through the Permian Basin. Rapid visibility reductions are likely. Slow down and leave extra space as you commute this morning.
